When the Dovahkiin isn't busy slaying draugr, dragons, and bandits, they might want to lay down their weapons for a moment and settle down with a loving partner - but are so many marriage options in The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, it can be hard to know who to pick. With 30 female characters and 36 male characters open to courting, regardless of the player's gender and race, there are countless possibilities to explore. However, a few NPCs in particular stand out as the best marriage candidates in Skyrim thanks to their unique personalities and backstories.
As much as the beloved RPG has withstood the test of time, its romance mechanics are inherently surface-level by modern standards. Especially without the Hearthfire DLC, marriage can sometimes seem like a secondary business venture or a just consistent way to obtain home-cooked meals. There are plenty of ways that Elder Scrolls 6 can improve marriage (including divorce, counterintuitively enough), and in the meantime, the modding community has created plenty of upgrades that can make the experience more fulfilling and immersive. But luckily, Skyrim's best marriage options are already perfect the way they are.
Borgakh Is A Strong Marriage Candidate In Skyrim
Being one of the few Orc marriage options in Skyrim, Borgakh is the daughter of Chief Larak, a warrior for the Mor Khazgur Orc Stronghold, and unfortunately, a reluctant soon-to-be bride of an arranged marriage. Although she's not too happy about marrying a random chieftain as per Orc tradition, she feels obligated to do, so as to not embarrass herself in the eyes of her ancestors.
The Dragonborn can rescue her from this predicament by either paying off her dowry to her father or simply convincing her to go on adventures with them. Either way, doing so will earn them Borgakh's respect alongside her mighty, muscular hand in marriage.
Scouts-Many-Marshes Is A Reptilian Romance Option In Skyrim
Players should always be an Argonian in Skyrim, but regardless of whether they the reptilians, Scouts-Many-Marshes is a stellar marriage candidate that shouldn't be overlooked. Sadly, he is the only Argonian character available for romance, but Bethesda couldn't have chosen a better character to represent his race.
Working on the docks of Windhelm, he is no stranger to the outright discrimination that takes place in his city. However, instead of becoming bitter (as many Argonians and Dark Elves understandably do), he approaches the situation in an optimistic light and fights for change peacefully. This is a fantastic quality to have in a partner, and it makes Scouts-Many-Marshes one of the best romance options in Skyrim.
Jenassa Doesn't Judge In Skyrim Marriage
A regular at The Drunken Huntsman and a capable sellsword, Jenassa is a Dark Elf who considers death to be an art, and enjoys killing targets for pay. It's no surprise that with her by their side, the Dragonborn can commit every possible crime in Skyrim without any qualms (which can't be said for most followers).
This makes her one of the game's best followers, but also one of the best marriage options. When the player is out and about doing less-than-savory things, they won't have to worry about getting reprimanded by their partner. This makes the fiercely loyal Jenassa one of the best people to marry in Skyrim.
Marcurio Is A Smug Spellcaster In Skyrim
Skyrim's Marcurio is the charmingly arrogant spellsword mercenary that the player can find hanging out at the Bee and the Barb in Riften. In contrast to Jenassa, Marcurio is a talkative and lighthearted man whose talent for the arcane arts is only outmatched by his ego.
However, his borderline narcissism isn't without reason, since he's one of Skyrim's strongest mage followers. His dialogue often mentions studying abroad in Cyrodiil, and his skills with destruction magic certainly prove that claim to be true. He is perfect husband material and one of the best spouses in Skyrim, assuming the player is into smug, silver-tongued devils.
Sylgja Is A Hardworking Wife In Skyrim
Unlike the spellswords, Sylgja is an honest, hardworking Nord woman making a simple living in Skyrim. Like her father before her, she is a miner and works through grueling twelve-hour shifts without a single complaint.
Unfortunately, she attracts some unwanted attention from ill-intentioned men. She rejects them outright, openly displaying that she's swayed by action, not by words. Plus, she will only marry the player after they do her a favor involving her family. Such consideration for her loved ones, combined with her commendable work ethic, make Sylgja one of Skyrim's best characters to marry.
Roggi Knot-Beard Is A Mead-Obsessed Marriage Option In Skyrim
Even though he's a Nord, who are Tamriel's biggest jerks in history, Roggi Knot-Beard is one of the most wholesome characters that the Dragonborn will have the pleasure of meeting in Skyrim. He's friendly to everyone regardless of race, engaging them in enthusiastic conversation (which often revolves around the topic of mead).
Upon meeting Roggi, he tells the player that he's in debt thanks to a large tab with the local innkeeper, Iddra. Incidentally, Iddra doesn't mind, but the fact that his biggest personality flaw is a love for alcoholic beverages paints him as one of the most kindhearted characters in his violent homeland, and thus one of the best options for romance in Skyrim.
Aela The Huntress Can Be A Lifelong Companion In Skyrim
Aela the Huntress is easily one of the most popular female marriage candidates in Skyrim, and it's for good reason. Not only is she a devoted member of the Companions, she's also likely a descendant of the original Five Hundred Companions, who mysteriously became werewolves. She takes great pride in bearing Hircine's gift of lycanthropy.
This undeniable ion is what drives many players to pursue her as a spouse. Plus, she's fiercely loyal and never backs down from a fight, making her one of the best wives in Skyrim (although the Dragonborn should probably think twice before double-crossing her).
Vilkas Is An Experienced Leader And Lover In Skyrim
Also being a member of the Companions, the Nord Vilkas takes his position as the Master of Arms seriously. Although he can be rather stern as a result, he makes up for this quality through his unmatched fortitude and intelligence: a fantastic quality in both a leader and a potential spouse in Skyrim.
Even strong-headed Companions like Farkas and Aela buckle under responsibility in a way that Vilkas does not. In a group that naturally tends to favor brute-force thugs, he sets himself apart as a calculated warrior and a consistent voice of reason.
Ysolda Is A Great Partner-In-Crime In Skyrim
Skyrim's Whiterun is full of secrets, but luckily, Ysolda isn't one of them. She's one of the first characters that the Dragonborn will meet when entering the city, and she comes across as a friendly, approachable businesswoman. She dreams of one day becoming the best trader in all the land, and her willingness to trade with Khajiit caravans when others remain distrustful is irable.
However, she's not all sunshine and rainbows. If the player finds a note on a dead orc and confronts Ysolda about it, she'll it to running a Sleeping Tree Sap business on the side. The drug is perfectly legal, but the methods of acquisition are decidedly not. Being sweet on the outside, but intelligent and surprisingly business-savvy on the inside, she's one of the best partners in Skyrim (both in business and in love).
Farkas Is Skyrim's Best Marriage Option
Farkas is understandably one of the most popular male marriage options in Skyrim. Not only is he an essential follower who can't die, he possesses qualities that most other mercenaries lack: kindness, unfaltering bluntness, and self-awareness of his downfalls (which Farkas openly its are his smarts, or lack thereof).
That humility and honesty are what make Farkas the best person to marry in Skyrim. Not to mention, he actually has a speech skill of 100. So perhaps it's less that he's unintelligent, and more that he only says what is needed. These unique traits, alongside his many unintentionally hilarious moments, make Farkas Skyrim's best marriage option.
