Hey you, you're finally awake — The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim could be coming to next generation consoles. The eight year old game still has a devout following, and with Elder Scrolls 6's release being years away, it may behoove Bethesda to release yet another edition of their critically-acclaimed title, this time with extra capabilities like increased mod slots. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is one of the best-selling video games in history, shipping over 30 million copies for all platforms as of November 2016.
If Skyrim does come to Xbox Series X and Playstation 5, it won't be the first time a new version of the game has been announced. The game was originally released for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 in November of 2011. A remastered version of the game called The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim – Special Edition was released for Windows, Xbox One and Playstation 4 in 2016. Versions of the game were also released for Nintendo Switch and PlayStation VR, with a virtual reality Skyrim game published for Windows in 2018. It was also accessible on Amazon's Alexa.
Players on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. Currently there is a hard limit of 255 active mods for the game. Mods like weather generators and armor modifications can stack up pretty quickly, leaving players wanting more.
Both Sony and Microsoft have announced backwards compatibility for thousands of their games for their new consoles. This doesn't mean there will be changes to the old games, however, it just means they will be able to run on the new systems. The developer had a chance to increase The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim's mod limit at the first next-gen release in 2016 and opted not to do it. The modding capability was scrapped altogether for Skyrim's Nintendo Switch release the next year.
A new edition of the often-updated The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim could include a mod increase and a graphics boost for the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5. However, the idea of it seems unlikely since Bethesda is currently working on the latest game in the series, Scrolls 6, as well as the company's new space-themed RPG, Starfield. Fans haven't seen much of Elder Scrolls 6 since its announcement at E3 2018, and recently Bethesda's senior vice president confirmed the game is still years away, leaving doubts that the company is simultaneously working on a new version of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim as well.
