The Zelda and Loftwing Amiibo was released in July of 2021 alongside The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD, offering a unique in-game travel function rather than special items or cosmetics. The HD remake of Skyward Sword was generally well-received, improving a number of gameplay and quality of life features in addition to its graphical tune-up. 10 years after the release of the original game for the Nintendo Wii, Skyward Sword HD and its dedicated Zelda and Loftwing Amiibo celebrated the 35th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda franchise.
Skyward Sword HD’s Zelda and Loftwing Amiibo allows players to fast-travel between the Sky and the Surface from anywhere in the world. Typically, players must find the nearest Bird Statue to travel back and forth between the two, but the Zelda and Loftwing Amiibo allows players to save some time by transporting them instantly from anywhere on the map. Skyward Sword HD is one of five games in the Zelda series that’s compatible with Amiibo, and players can use the Amiibo by calling for Fi, who has also improved in Skyward Sword HD.
However, the Zelda and Loftwing Amiibo is the only Amiibo that’s compatible with Skyward Sword HD. Surprisingly, that includes the Skyward Sword Link Amiibo, which only has unique uses in Breath of the Wild and Animal Crossing: New Leaf. The Zelda and Loftwing Amiibo is also more expensive than most Amiibos in The Legend of Zelda Amiibo series, but the quality of life feature it unlocks makes it worth the extra cash for some players and collectors.
Skyward Sword HD’s Zelda & Loftwing Amiibo Lets Players Fast-Travel
Using the Zelda and Loftwing Amiibo on the Surface will allow Skyward Sword HD players to instantly travel to the Sky and catch a ride on their own Loftwing. If players use the Amiibo again while in the Sky or Skyloft, they’ll be able to travel back to where they left the Surface. This function also works in dungeons and buildings, so it’s easy for players to quickly travel back to Skyward Sword HD's Skyloft in a pinch if they need to replenish health or stock up on items.
In addition to its fast-travel function in Skyward Sword HD, the Zelda and Loftwing Amiibo can also be used as a Zelda Amiibo to unlock special items and cosmetics in several other games. Along with a few other Legend of Zelda titles like Breath of the Wild and Link’s Awakening, games like Skyrim, Super Mario Maker, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate are also compatible with Zelda Amiibos. However, the Zelda and Loftwing Amiibo’s transport function is one of the more unique Amiibo functions in the Zelda Amiibo series, making it a fitting companion to the franchise’s 35th anniversary release of Skyward Sword HD.
