Summary
- Rosenbaum updates fans on Smallville animated sequel progress at a Nashville Comicon 2024 .
- Tom Welling and Rosenbaum are collaborating on a potential Smallville animated series with original creators.
- Some loose animation has already been produced for the sequel pitch, which Rosenbaum praises the quality of.
The live-action Superman TV shows is still Smallville, which ran for a decade and focused on the early days of Clark Kent before becoming the Man of Steel. But Smallville also served as the ultimate origin story for Lex Luthor, showing how he ended up as Superman's most dangerous enemy.
Following his update about the Smallville animated sequel series to Screen Rant in March, Rosenbaum revealed during his Nashville Comicon 2024 , moderated by Comic Book, that "some loose animation" has been produced for a potential pitch down the line. However, Rosenbaum stressed once again that the timing has to be right, sharing the following:
Tom and I are working on a Smallville animated series that we're trying to get made. It's gonna take time. But the creators of Smallville are attached, they want to be a part of it. And we, you know, when it's the right time, we'll pitch it. You know, we're working on it and we have some loose animation that we've worked [on] with someone who was just awesome. It looks great. So if we can get that made, that'd be awesome.

Throughout its ten season run on the CW, Smallville produced some amazing quotes, ranging from hilarious dark comedy to profound insights on heroism.
Why An Animated Smallville Sequel Would Be A Perfect Way To Continue The Show
A Smallville animated sequel show would be a solid continuation for the Superman series for multiple reasons. Despite having been off the air for over a decade, Smallville continues to find a new audience all over the world through streaming and home media releases. To this day, Smallville is the longest-running Superman TV show - as well as live-action comic book series - of all time.
While it wasn't in live-action, the Smallville season 11 tie-in comic showed how that universe could be expanded upon when not restricted by budget. With an animated sequel, Smallville would be able to avoid the financial constraints that come with a live-action counterpart. Having the actors also come back to voice their respective Smallville characters would also likely be a lot easier to arrange than bringing them all back for a live-action sequel.
A Smallville sequel could also fit into James Gunn's Elseworlds brand under DC Studios while the main DC Universe continuity gets fleshed out in the coming years. Animation has also always been one of the areas where DC has succeeded, which Smallville could continue to thrive on. Hopefully, Smallville will be back on the screen sooner rather than later.
