MediaTek and Qualcomm have announced their flagship chipsets for the next generation of will use Snapdragon chips in all regions for the first time in years.
MediaTek also has a fair amount of clients, especially Chinese brands such as Vivo, Xiaomi and Oppo. These brands mentioned above will likely launch Snapdragon and MediaTek variants of their flagships in select markets, just as they've done in the past. For example, Oppo's Find X5 Pro is available in both Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and Dimensity 9000 variants. However, the latter is exclusive to China. Xiaomi also sells a MediaTek version of the Xiaomi 12 Pro.
Despite being rival chipsets, the Dimensity 9200 and the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 have more than a few similarities. The two processors are built on TSMC's 4nm process node, have an octa-core U, and are both 64-bit chipsets. In of configuration, the Dimensity 9200 has a Cortex-X3 prime core clocked at 3.05GHz, three Cortex-A715 performance cores clocked at 2.85GHz and four efficiency Cortex-A510 cores clocked at 1.8GHz. In contrast, The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2's prime Kryo core, also based on the Cortex-X3, is clocked at 3.2GHz. In addition, it is paired with 2 Kryo performance cores based on the Cortex-A715 and clocked at 2.8GHz, another set of two Kryo performance cores clocked at 2.8GHz but based on the Cortex-A710 and three Kryo efficiency cores based on the Cortex-A510 and clocked at 2.0GHz.
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Has The Early Lead
In of GPU, the Dimensity 9200 features Arm's Immortalis-G715, while the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 has a new Adreno GPU, which it claims delivers 25 percent improved performance and 45 percent better power efficiency than the previous generation. In addition, both GPUs ray tracing, Vulkan 1.3 and AV1. The two processors also UFS 4.0, Bluetooth 5.3 and Bluetooth LE Audio. There is also a 5G modem with for both mmWave and sub-6GHz networks and a Wi-Fi chip that brings the new Wi-Fi 7 standard. Furthermore, there is a new Image Signal Processor present too. However, while the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 can only a single camera up to 200MP, MediaTek's chipset maxes out at 320MP.
From the U details above, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 has a higher-clocked prime core. It also has more performance cores and higher clocked efficiency cores than Dimensity 9200. These differences in U arrangement and clock speed are also evident in early benchmark results. Using the Geekbench results of Vivo's X90 series as an example, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2-powered Vivo X90 Pro Plus recorded a single-core score of 1485 points and a multi-core score of 4739 points. On the other hand, the Dimensity 9200-powered Vivo X90 recorded a single-core score of 1353 points and a multi-core score of 4055 points. Both phones were benchmarked with 12GB of RAM and running Android 13. These results show that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is the more powerful chipset.
However, it is essential to note that these benchmark results are of unreleased devices, which are likely running the test software, so there is a possibility the results will differ when the commercially-available models are benchmarked. Also, benchmark results are just a part of the picture, as there are other factors to consider, such as sustained performance, heating and the like. Nevertheless, Android phones powered by either chipset should offer impressive performance compared to the previous generation.
