Disney’s live-action Snow White remake has been plagued with controversy since it was announced, including criticism aimed at Zegler’s casting as the lead due to her being Latina. Other controversies included the casting of the Seven Dwarfs, who will appear as CGI in the movie, alongside the lead actor’s harsh criticisms of the original movie, stirring up more polarizing discussion about its new adaptation.
Now, speaking with Vogue Mexico (via Deadline) Zegler has addressed the casting criticism she's received for Snow White one month before its theatrical release. The actor explained she believed the critiques levied at the movie came from a group of people who “feel so much ion” about the main character. She believes that, although not everyone will see the film in the same way, those involved have done their best to create a faithful adaptation. Check out what Zegler had to say, as translated by Deadline, below:
I interpret people’s feelings about this film as their ion for her, and what an honor to be a part of something for which people feel so much ion. We’re not always going to have the same sentiments as those around us and all that we can do is give the best of ourselves.
What Zegler's Statement Says About Snow White's Casting Backlash
She's Unbothered By Those Who Don't Want Her In The Role
Out of everyone on the cast of Snow White, Zegler's role has drummed up the most backlash, as the character has typically been portrayed by white actors. This was compounded by the lead actor's public criticism of the 1937 original, while praising the new version as better due to changes made to the story. A portion of criticism included racist remarks about her casting in the role, something that seemingly hasn't dissuaded her from believing the majority of critics are simply ionate about the source material.

Disney's Snow White Could Fulfill A 13-Year-Old Promise With Another Live-Action Movie Coming In 2025
The live-action adaptation of Disney's Snow White could world with another 2025 film to fulfill a 13-year-old promise, much to the excitement of fans.
However, the movie's criticism goes beyond Zegler's role, as evident by the Dwarfs being CGI following criticism over the casting of actors who don't have dwarfism as the seven characters. It also has to be a major hit at the box office to make money, sporting a reported $269.4 million budget, which requires the movie to earn upwards of $600 million to make a profit. The actor playing Snow White appears to be the least of the film's worries, with the lead's response also indicating how much care was put into the film despite the criticisms it's been receiving.
Snow White was filmed from March to July 2022, with additional filming taking place in June 2024.
