TBS will now be the home of the back in 2015 that a TV series based around the concept was put in development.
Josh Friedman (Sarah Connor Chronicles) originally developed the series and saw TNT order a pilot in 2016, before a full season commitment was made in 2018. It wasn't long after this announcement was made, though, that Doctor Strange) leave the show himself. After changing showrunners and losing the pilot director, Snowpiercer has now switched networks - but with positive results.
During WarnerMedia's presentation at Upfronts today, it was announced that Snowpiercer has moved from TNT to TBS (both owned by WarnerMedia) to help usher in more dramatic content on the usually comedy-centric channel. The news comes with the reveal that Snowpiercer will debut in the Spring of 2020, and that it has already been renewed for a second season with Manson continuing to serve as the showrunner. Brett Weitz, general manager for TBS and TNT, said the following about the news and TBS' faith in Snowpiercer.
Snowpiercer is the perfect show to kick-off TBS’ entry into dramas with intricate storytelling, stunning visuals and first-class acting. We believe in the longevity of this series and that audiences will be amazed by the fantastical world that brings to life such relevant social, political and environmental issues.
The move to TBS and season 2 renewal is hopefully the final change that Snowpiercer will undergo. Even though it has had a long and troubled development, there is still promise and intrigue with the story. The series will be set seven years after Earth has become a frozen wasteland, where the remaining of humanity all live in a train that travels across the entire globe. The train cars are used to divide up the inhabitants by class, with each one serving a different purpose.
Snowpiercer stars Girl Meets World) will become a series regular for season 2.
Snowpiercer season 1 premieres in Spring 2020 on TBS.
