Sonic The Hedgehog 2 proves that the video game characters are just as important and fun to watch as they are to play. This new film not only introduces more of the lore of the franchise, but it also has an overwhelmingly positive message, which is that being different is a good thing. It follows Sonic and his new friend, Tails, as they attempt to stop Dr. Robotnik and Knuckles from getting the Emerald that will grant them unstoppable powers.
With this all being said, what makes this film great is the fact that it introduces two new characters from the video game franchise, making them hilarious and interesting. This welcome change has made the newest film so much more impactful for fans of the video games because they can cheer on more of their favorite characters. However, it is abundantly clear that some video game characters outshine others.
Dr. Robotnik (AKA Eggman)
Dr. Robotnik, though he is the main antagonist of this film and the entire Sonic The Hedgehog franchise, didn't get a ton of screen time this movie because he had to make room for Knuckles and Tails to shine. There are a lot of great movies like Sonic The Hedgehog 2, but none have the comedy legend, Jim Carrey. He plays this role with conviction and he does it well considering he's the only video game character who is live-action.
Though he doesn't have as many great one-liners as some of the other characters, he knows his mission and he uses his skills and shared interest in the Emerald to work with Knuckles to get what he wants. Jim Carrey gives his all to this part and exaggerates his movements and words to come across as an animated person to match the energy of Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails. Overall, he plays an excellent part in the movie, but it would have been great to see more of him.
Knuckles The Echidna
Knuckles is a hardcore echidna who knows more about the Emeralds and the powers that they hold than anyone else. Voiced by Idris Elba, he has a deep voice that matches his seriousness when it comes to finding what he wants. He directly challenges Sonic's attitude, because Knuckles is just a no-nonsense kind of echidna.
Even though he's pretty terse, Knuckles still has a sense of humor that is ridiculously funny. When he tells Dr. Robotnik what to text Sonic he is super serious as he talks, but what he says just makes him sound like a goofball. What makes this character more intriguing is also the fact that his backstory is explained in-depth as he is the last of the echidnas, which is a weight that is too heavy for anyone to carry. This being said, it's clear that people like him considering he's getting his TV series shortly.
Miles "Tails" Prower
Tails are one of the sweetest and most humble characters in the entire movie because he treats people with the utmost kindness and never lets his friend down. Though it may be a little weird that he spent a long time just watching Sonic before he finally decided to talk to him, he's a well-intentioned kid that has a lot to learn. It also has to be said that Tails is the cutest character in this entire movie. He's just too adorable.
Tails are also super smart and inventive because he can basically operate and create any kind of technology easily. It's how he found Sonic, it's how he translates languages and it's one of his most unique traits, besides his two tails. Though he can often be unsure of himself, his need to help other people and desire to be like Sonic make him irable as a character. He's one of the best parts of this video game-adapted movie.
Sonic The Hedgehog
Sonic The Hedgehog 2, which has some of the best video game tropes, makes Sonic the best character because he's funny, he's powerful and he changes the most in this movie. At the start of the film, he's constantly being told by his human friend, Tom, that he needs to be more careful and be a little more responsible and mature. Sonic also has some of the best quotes in the movie because he's just naturally a comedic genius and voiced by the hilarious Ben Schwartz.
By the end of the movie, not only has Sonic become a mentor of sorts to Tails, but he realizes that the only way he can stop the evil forces of Dr. Robotnik and Knuckles from getting the Emerald is if he takes things seriously and grows up. Because his responsibilities have increased, he needs to buckle down and stop slacking, which he does. The other thing that makes Sonic the best character is that he's always positive even when he's in a tough situation because he knows he needs to stay strong for Tails.
