Not much is known about Sonic 2022's plot as of yet, with the only clues being the brief footage shown of the Blue Blur himself running through a foreboding forest ruin and what appears to be a visualization of data forming at his fast-moving feet. Fans will have to wait a while to get the answers too, as Sonic Team doesn’t want to rush this latest adventure through development. Rumored to be titled Sonic Rangers, this new game is said to be a reboot of the long-running Sonic The Hedgehog series.
As reported by Siliconera, Sonic the Hedgehog producer Takashi Iizuka detailed a few of his company’s plans for the franchise in an interview with Famitsu magazine (according to Ryokutya2089), such as opening up a Sonic theme park and turning the Blue Blur into a VTuber. When the subject of the 2022 game came up, Iizuka said that his team will be taking its time to ensure that this new installment is the best it can be. He also stated the new game will keep the “future evolution of Sonic” in mind and will be different from past titles in some way.
With today, June 23, being his birthday, Netflix animated series, titled Sonic Prime, is currently in the works and Sega is remastering 2010’s Sonic Colors, which is considered by fans to be a high mark amidst the series’ more divisive modern era, for current consoles this fall. Additionally, IDW is holding a special contest in honor of its ongoing Sonic The Hedgehog comic series, and production is currently underway for the sequel to last year’s well-received live-action Sonic movie, which is adding franchise mainstays like Miles “Tails” Prower and Knuckles The Echidna into the fold.
Given how hit-or-miss 3D Sonic games tend to be, it’s good that Sega is taking the extra time to make sure this new title is something truly special - especially if it is indeed a reboot that will set the stage for the entire series going forward. When the next Sonic The Hedgehog game does launch next year, it will be available on all current consoles.
