Sonic the Hedgehog movie, the franchise has had an unprecedented amount of success with fans and critics alike to the point of breaking the conception that live-action video game adaptations are always bad. Sonic 3’s release date gives the franchise another chance to prove its worth, although it might be harder to pull off than before given the specific competition the sequel will have.
Whether by coincidence or by design, the Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore. In both cases, Sonic the Hedgehog managed to either hold its own at the box office or flat-out sur its competition, making it clear that this is a franchise more than capable of competing with big-name movies.
Sonic the Hedgehog will have yet another chance to compete with a big box office draw with Sonic the Hedgehog 3. The second sequel is set to release on December 20, 2024, meaning that it will be out on the same day as the third Avatar movie. James Cameron's Avatar 3 is almost guaranteed to make a splash at the box office, so Sonic 3 releasing on the same day means that it will be faced with even heavier competition than its predecessors, and this could further prove the franchise’s staying power depending on how it performs.
Could Sonic 3’s Box Office Beat Avatar 3?
Right off the bat, it would seem unlikely that Sonic the Hedgehog 3 could beat Avatar 3 at the box office, but it might not be impossible. Sonic 3 is releasing during the holiday season, which is when family movies tend to perform well in theaters and on streaming, so that could work to give the movie an extra boost in popularity. Not only that, but Avatar 3’s success will likely be contingent on how successful Avatar: The Way of the Water is. Since it's the first movie in its franchise in over a decade, if Avatar: The Way of the Water is not a hit, then there be less of an interest in Avatar 3 and the sequels to follow it.
With Sonic the Hedgehog 3 releasing on the same day as Avatar 3, Sonic the Hedgehog is being set up for its biggest box office battle yet. Various outside factors should make it possible for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 to at least have good returns at the box office, but with Avatar 3 as competition, that could still be a hard feat, nonetheless. Regardless, putting Sonic the Hedgehog in direct competition with a franchise like Avatar is the perfect way to see just how much staying power the franchise truly has.
