As the Sony Spider-Man Universe expands, an actor that has played the character in one of his several movies might be the pick to become Sony's Sony does not necessarily have to make Spider-Man movies to keep the rights, as projects focusing on characters connected to the hero also work in the studio's favor. This has led to the creation of Sony's Spider-Man Universe.
Initially named Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters, the studio has since decided to opt for an important title change. Sony's Spider-Man Universe makes the hero's debut inevitable, as the studio decided to change its more general universe name to focus on the character that should theoretically be at the center of it all. The Sony Spider-Man Universe has released three movies so far; Venom, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, and Morbius. Soon ing them are the announced Kraven the Hunter, El Muerto, Madame Web, and Venom 3. One of those films could introduce Spider-Man to the universe, and one of the hero's movie actors could return for the role.
Tom Holland
As the current Spider-Man movie actor, Tom Holland is the prime candidate to Sony's Spider-Man Universe. Holland's version of the character is part of the deal between Marvel Studios and Sony, with the actor ing Sony's Spider-Man Universe as its Spider-Man possibly being a new condition to the character remaining in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after both studios' most recent negotiation. Holland's Spider-Man has already appeared in the Sony Spider-Man Universe, with the character showing up in Venom: Let There Be Carnage's post-credits scene, although Holland's Peter Parker was only shown through a TV screen Tom Hardy's Eddie Brock watched.
Hardy's Venom even crossed over to the MCU, appearing in Spider-Man: No Way Home's post-credits scene before being quickly sent back to Sony's Spider-Man Universe. A piece of the Venom symbiote stayed behind in the MCU, which makes it connecting with Holland's Peter Parker inevitable, teasing a future full-on crossover with Hardy's character. Based on the already existing connections between Holland's Spider-Man and Hardy's Venom, it would be surprising if any other actor were to play the hero in Sony's Spider-Man Universe, but that does not mean that there are no other options.
Tobey Maguire
Original movie Spider-Man actor Tobey Maguire returned to the role in 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home for the first time after he concluded Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy in 2007. After so many years away, Maguire is not ready to hang up the suit after just coming back. Maguire wants to return as Spider-Man, with the actor recently saying that "it would be a “yes!” from him if asked to play Spider-Man in any new projects. When speaking about his future as the character, Maguire did not specify what movie he would want to return in, merely saying, "I love these films and I love all of the different series."
Maguire could return as Spider-Man in the MCU to help save the multiverse in Avengers: Secret Wars, but based on the actor's words, it seems like he wants to keep on playing the character for more than just another film. Maguire becoming the Sony Spider-Man would grant him his wish, with the actor possibly getting the chance to finally star in a Spider-Man 4. He could also simply make appearances in a ing role across the different films that will come to Sony's Spider-Man Universe over the years.
Andrew Garfield
Like Maguire, Andrew Garfield also returned as Peter Parker — from The Amazing Spider-Man films — in the MCU's Spider-Man: No Way Home. Garfield's return helped usher in a new wave of love for his interpretation of the character, with his Peter finally finding redemption for Gwen Stacy's death after saving Zendaya's MJ from the same fate. Since the actor's acclaimed return as the hero, fans have been asking for a Garfield The Amazing Spider-Man 3 in Sony's Spider-Man Universe. As the only live-action Spider-Man movie actor without a trilogy, Garfield is perhaps the one with the most to gain through a Sony Spider-Man Universe role.
The move would make a lot of sense, as the actor's Spider-Man movies have a similar feel to the world of Hardy's Venom franchise, and as the villain/anti-hero never appeared in Garfield's The Amazing Spider-Man films, Sony could easily retcon the two franchises into taking place in the same world. Garfield is interested in a crossover with Hardy's Venom, as the actor said “that’s a cool idea," and he is "definitely open" to a return as Spider-Man in the future if the project is right.
Shameik Moore
Shameik Moore voices Miles Morales in the Spider-Verse movies. Moore wants to play Miles in live-action, and the actor could certainly do so in Sony's Spider-Man Universe. Recently, Moore received backlash for his live-action Miles Morales comment, with many claiming the actor would be too old to play the character in the MCU alongside Holland's Spider-Man.
That is where the Sony universe comes into play. Sony's Spider-Man Universe is not bound by most of the strict rules the MCU has, and as such, could introduce a different, older version of Miles than fans are used to. Moore has shown through the Spider-Verse franchise that he is a perfect actor for Spider-Man, and he would excel with the chance of appearing all over the Sony Spider-Man Universe as its resident Spider-Man. Besides, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse already included live-action crossovers, making things easier for Moore's Miles to come to live-action in the character's future.
Sony Could Cast A New Spider-Man
While there are some good choices among the existing Spider-Man movie actors, Sony could choose to cast a new actor as the hero for their franchise. This way, Sony's Spider-Man Universe could remain fresh, presenting an exciting new take on the character rather than rehashing what has come before. It would also help avoid creating confusion among the audience, as the existing Spider-Man movie actors are all heavily tied to their respective franchises. By taking this approach, Sony would also immediately turn the spotlight to their Spider-Man Universe, as a new Spider-Man actor announcement is always sure to make waves in the industry.
Sony's Spider-Man Universe May Never Have A Spider-Man
Alternately, Sony's Spider-Man Universe could make the unexpected choice of just never featuring the hero. Sony's Spider-Man Universe may falter at times, such as Jared Leto's Morbius bombing at the box office and the decision to greenlight the El Muerto movie, but Hardy's Venom movies have been crowd-pleasers, and between Venom 3, Aaron Taylor-Johnson's R-rated Kraven the Hunter, and the star-studded female ensemble in Madame Web, the Sony Spider-Man Universe should have enough staying power to survive without ever including the wall-crawler. Still, Spider-Man being included in the universe that carries his name seems inevitable.
