South Park season 27 gets a new trailer, teasing tough times in the U.S. as planes crash, democracy falls, and Diddy travels to space. Created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the hit Comedy Central animated sitcom premiered in 1997, following Stan, Kyle, Cartman, and Kenny and their exploits in and around the fictional town of South Park, Colorado. Season 26 brought the show back in early 2023, satirizing elements of pop culture, politics, and more in the show's signature darkly comedic fashion, with South Park season 27 confirmed to be on the way.

South Park Studios now shares the first trailer for season 27, providing a first look at the line-straddling humor to come from the show's new episodes. The trailer, which confirms that the series will return on July 9, features French citizens in boats pulling down the Statue of Liberty, Diddy chasing Cartman through space above an alien world, Kyle growing feathers, and Randy experimenting with ketamine, all over a new, haunting rendition of "Blame Canada," a song first featured in South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut. It's not yet clear how many episodes will be in South Park season 27, but seasons 25 and 26 had only 6 episodes each.

What This Means For South Park Season 27

The Comedy Central Show Is Once Again Pulling From The Headlines

South Park has never shied away from satirizing what's been in the headlines, and there's certainly been plenty of material to pull from over the last few years. Global geopolitics looks to be one key focus in season 27, with the show referencing growing U.S. tension with countries like Canada and , the latter of which recently had one politician remark that America should give back the Statue of Liberty. It appears that a war with Canada could also be on the horizon in South Park season 27.

Diddy, of course, is currently in the middle of a $30 million sexual assault lawsuit with his trial set to begin next month, and he appears briefly in the trailer in what could be some kind of dream sequence or hallucination. The rash of plane-related accidents around the world is also referenced in the South Park season 27 trailer, with Butters shown to be very poorly running an air traffic control center as planes collide midair behind him. The Stone and Parker show, then, certainly isn't getting any less topical in its next set of episodes.

The Show Continues To Do What It Does Best

South Park episodes have always pushed boundaries, often diving head-first into issues that other shows may shy away from. That doesn't look to be changing in season 27. Though the show has been and probably will continue to be divisive, it does have a loyal fan following, and Trey and Parker's comedic stylings continue to entertain.

While the political and controversial subject matter in some shows is enough to turn some viewers off, especially when these types of issues dominate news cycles for weeks at a time, South Park usually features enough distance between real events and its satirization of them to avoid fatigue. With Diddy, for example, it's clear from the trailer that Trey and Parker have put some sort of fantastical spin on things. It remains to be seen how South Park season 27 will go down with viewers, but there's evidently plenty to look forward to.
