Sparklite Is A New Twist On Roguelite And Adventure Classics

Sparklite could be one of the biggest indie releases of 2019, and it has the gameplay trailer to back it up. First revealed in the second half of 2018, Sparklite has been relatively quiet ever since, but returned to the spotlight with a new trailer and new screenshots earlier today.

Sparklite is developed by Red Blue Games and published by Merge Games. The game will be available on Windows, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch in Fall 2019, and is clearly aimed at being a nostalgic callback to games like The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. To its credit, Sparklite isn't afraid of leaning into its inspirations, fully embracing the aesthetic and gameplay elements that served as its foundation before separating itself with steampunk and roguelite innovations.

Sparklite's new gameplay trailer is reminiscent of games like Legend of Zelda comparisons to the fore. There's a smoothness in player movement that feels like Red Blue Games might be onto something special when the game releases, though. Check out the new trailer here:

The trailer follow Ada, Sparklite's protagonist, as she makes her way through several examples of the world design that seems to be so crucial to how players experience the game. While some environments, especially the one with tall, dead grass, will inevitably draw out even more Legend of Zelda juxtapositions, others are uniquely tailored to Sparklite's story of environmental corruption and grassroots revolution. The steampunk elements are the most striking, and it's good that they are, since that will be the thing that separates Sparklite from other roguelites visually.

Sparklite has been previously praised by critics who had the chance to go hands-on with it, and the new gameplay trailer does little to suggest that the game isn't in a similarly tantalizing spot now. While we're still months away from the game's release window, Sparklite seems poised to take a run at being one of the indie darlings of 2019, and anyone looking for a nostalgic but new spin on some of gaming's most iconic classics will want to keep a close eye on the game as more news emerges prior to launch.
