The Speak No Evil remake has become Blumhouse's highest-grossing movie of the year after ing a new box office milestone. Directed by James Watkins, the horror film serves as a remake of Christian Tafdrup's 2022 Danish film of the same name, with a story that follows a family spending a weekend in another family's vacation home only to find that their hosts have sinister intentions. The Speak No Evil reviews have been generally positive thus far and the film got off to a strong start at the box office last month.
Collider now reveals that Speak No Evil has sured Night Swim's $54 million gross at the worldwide box office to become Blumhouse's highest-grossing release of the year. The remake's worldwide total now stands at an impressive $59 million, comprising $29.4 million domestic and $29.5 million from overseas territories. Speak No Evil continues to display strong holds at the box office, with daily rankings for October 2 putting it ahead of Megalopolis, which hit theaters two weeks later.
What Speak No Evil's Success Means For Blumhouse
How The Company's Other 2024 Films Performed
Speak No Evil's budget is estimated to be $15 million, meaning its break-even point was likely somewhere between $30 million and $37.5 million. The remake's worldwide total has now firmly sured both of these figures, and the film is sure to continue crawling higher in the weeks ahead. Normally, such a performance would lead to discussion of a sequel, but the Speak No Evil ending certainly seems to close the book on this particular story.

While the Speak No Evil story may not be continued in a sequel, the film has made 2024 another strong year for Blumhouse. As seen in the chart above, Night Swim exceeded expectations earlier this year despite mostly negative reviews, and Imaginary also performed well with a similar reception. In 2024, Afraid marks Blumhouse's only box office flop, with that film barely managing to sur its budget, unlikely to break-even. Still, Blumhouse's 2024 box office total sits at an impressive $170.1 million.
Our Take On Speak No Evil's Success
Blumhouse Has Found A Winning Strategy
Before the film was even released, there was some negative buzz surrounding it. Considering the Danish film came out only two years ago and remains an effective and compelling watch, the Blumhouse remake of Speak No Evil felt unnecessary. The remake ended up exceeding expectations, however, and critics praised McAvoy's lead performance and many of Watkins' changes to the original.
In addition to McAvoy, the Speak No Evil cast includes Mackenzie Davis, Aisling Franciosi, Scoot McNairy, Alex West Lefler, and Dan Hough.
McAvoy remains a draw for audiences under certain circumstances, and, after Split, he's certainly known as an actor who can effectively play a sinister villain. Blumhouse continues to succeed by making horror-thriller movies at lower budget levels and effectively marketing them, and Speak No Evil's success is certainly a testament to the company's strong approach to making movies.
