Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 To Get New Subtitle

Spider-Man: Homecoming may have not yet hit theaters but Sony and Marvel are already laying the grounds for its sequel, with co-producers Amy Pascal and Kevin Feige revealing a bit on the follow-up's subtitle and filming schedule. Homecoming will properly launch Tom Holland as the new Peter Parker/Spider-Man and will be the first time in the character's film history that he will be part of the bigger Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

While the film has as not been released yet, Homecoming's 2019 sequel.

Sitting down with Collider while doing the press rounds promoting the film, Pascal and Feige talk about what we can expect on the web-slinging superhero's next standalone film. The latter revealed that the sequel will not have a numbering on it, and instead, "It will be "Spider-Man: Subtitle.” In the meantime, however, Feige adds that "Internally we just call it “Homecoming 2” [for now]." Additionally, Pascal shares that pre-production for the film will start this August, with principal photography set to kick off April or May of next year.

Feige had previously confirmed that Homecoming 2 will be the MCU's entry point to Phase 4. It will be the first property to come out after the yet-to-be-titled Avengers 4, where it is expected that a lot of the current narratives running in the MCU will be wrapped up - meaning, the end of the road for some of our favorite Phase 1 characters. It might still be quite a while before we find out what the subtitle for the movie will be as it can be a spoiler for its precedent film, but given how Marvel's planning is always years ahead, it is possible that they are already tinkering on a couple of options. It's also interesting to note that Marvel continues to veer away from film sequel title numbering. Aside from the Robert Downey Jr's Iron Man franchise and Guardians of the Galaxy, MCU's sub-franchises have all been utilizing subtitles.

It might be a little early to discuss specifics about Homecoming 2. But recently, a slew of information has come out regarding the film, including Adrian Toomes aka The Vulture. However, since this version of Spider-Man exists in the MCU, some new characters from the bigger franchise are expected to board the follow-up. If Homecoming director Jon Watts does return as expected for the sequel, he will the ranks of Jon Favreau (Iron Man 1 & 2), James Gunn (Guardians 1, 2 & 3), Peyton Reed (Ant-Man & Ant-Man and the Wasp), Joss Whedon (Avengers & Avengers: Age of Ultron) and the Russo Brothers (Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War & 4) as the filmmakers who have helmed/will helm more than one Marvel movie.

While information about Homecoming 2 is still scarce at this point (given that it is still two years and seven films away), we can first set our sights on what is coming in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Following the standalone film, there won't really be any Parker scarcity in the MCU - as the character is confirmed to appear in next year's Infinity War and presumably also, its 2019 sequel.
