Marvel hero's identity has already been discovered, providing a shocking twist to an exciting new series that follows in the path of so many great MCU stories. After the incredible Spider-Man: No Way Home erased the universe's memory of Peter Parker being Spider-Man, now is such an interesting time for looking into secret identities. I haven't seen them be an important part of most hero journeys in the franchise, yet they have played into many Spider-Man stories in particular.
I believe that perception around secret identity stories in general is changing, with Superman & Lois making many interesting choices concerning this theme in 2024. However, Spider-Man's duality is core to his stories in Marvel Comics, and has been so in his film appearances as well. Following three iterations of the character in live-action, Marvel's new animated series has broken a record for how quickly a potential foe found out his identity. This occurs in an incredibly tense moment shockingly early in the new show.
Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man's Peter Parker Gets His Secret Identity Discovered In Episode 2
Peter's Identity Is Discovered Less Than An Hour Into The Series
During Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man episode 2, Peter has to leave his internship to help stop a villain who is burning down a building. In doing so, he is caught on camera at Oscorp changing into his Spider-Man costume. The second episode ends with Norman Osborn revealing that he has footage proving Peter is Spider-Man, closing the episode on a moment of great tension. Despite trying so hard to keep his secret identity hidden, Peter has been found out by one of his greatest comic enemies.
Allies have found out Peter's identity in the past. Tony Stark knew Peter was Spider-Man before the two even met, and Ned discovered his secret early in Spider-Man: Homecoming. However, never has a character known to be a Spider-Man villain discovered Peter's identity this quickly, which helps to make this story different from the MCU Spider-Man or any other on-screen iteration. It takes most of the film for Norman to discover Spider-Man's identity in the first Sam Raimi film, and he quickly uses that information against him. It remains to be seen how differently things will play out here.
Why Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man's Peter Parker Has His Secret Identity Discovered So Fast
The Importance Of Spider-Man Having A Secret Identity Has Changed
Details in the new animated series show Norman Osborn as a kind of replacement for Tony Stark. The scene in Peter’s apartment matches some of the beats from Captain America: Civil War, and seems to be setting Norman up to be a mentor to Spider-Man in the same way Iron Man was in the films. Because of this, Spider-Man's identity had to be known to the villain. This dramatic reveal is important and will allow Norman to be able to Spider-Man with his nearly unlimited resources.
I believe that Norman already knew Peter was Spider-Man. If Tony Stark had been able to figure it out before coming to recruit Peter, I believe Norman would have already had the same resources available to discover this. After all, everyone at Oscorp made fun of Peter for believing he was supposed to meet with Norman directly, despite the fact that Norman requested it specifically. There is clearly more behind Norman's recruitment of Peter for this internship that remains to be seen, and now has the room to be explored.
Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man Shows How Spider-Man's Secret Identity Being Discovered Opens Many Story Doors For The MCU Show
This New Detail Suggests An Original Future For This Spider-Man
The need to hide Spider-Man's identity is an important part of the character's story, but having Norman discover this so early can help to craft the relationship between him and Peter. Norman is set to take on a role of mentor to Peter in an unusual way that will see the villain integrated in Peter's life. This new Spider-Man origin story will allow Peter to grow as a hero, and to receive great technology, but will surely become an issue when Norman eventually becomes the Green Goblin in the animated series.
Green Goblin is Spider-Man's greatest foe, and I think having a version of this character that is deeply linked with Peter is such a great choice. The eventual conflict that is fated to arise between them will allow for an interesting version of their dynamic - as Norman is, so far, Peter's friend and mentor, but he is already intimidating, if only because of the villain we know he can become. I am very excited to see those levels of intimidation become an actual threat later in the new series.
I'm shocked that Peter's identity was revealed to his greatest villain so early in the new series, but it makes sense. Norman must know Spider-Man's identity in order to effectively take on the role of mentor to him. This will undoubtedly lead to compelling stories that see the relationship between the two strained and broken. Norman is seemingly fated to become a villain sometime in Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, and the bond now seeded between the two will only serve to make that more impactful.
