Warning! Contains spoilers for Spider-Man: Reign 2 #4
I have to it, Marvel got me with the latest swerve in the dystopian Miles Morales. While I was shocked by this reinvention of the characters' familiar dynamics, I'm also very excited to find out where the book's creative team takes this unexpected family unit.
dystopic reality where Kingpin controls New York and what's left of humanity. Spider-Man is forced to fight an older, stronger version of his former protégé, Miles Morales, and gets horribly battered, but is saved when Kitty-Kat stops the fight and reveals that Miles Morales is her father.
I was already stunned by the introduction of Kitty-Kat as Black Cat’s daughter, after her impromptu kiss with old Peter Parker, but the reveal of her being Miles Morales’s daughter left me with an entirely new set of questions.
Spider-Man Reign's New Black Cat Hints That This Continuity's Version Of Miles Morales Was Not The Best Father
Spider-Man: Reign 2 #4; story and art by Kaare Andrews, color by Brian Reber, and letters by Joe Caramagna
It’s undeniable that every aspect of the Reign Universe is depicted as beyond morbid, from the dystopic authoritarian New York government to the tragic death of Mary Jane, but I had hoped Miles Morales, my favorite Spider-Man, would have been spared the Reign Universe's anguish. It’s clear Miles has been hardened into a more cruel version of himself when, during his reunion with his daughter, Kitty divulges Miles killed her mother and she has been running from him all her life.

After 57 Years, Marvel Brutally Kills Off 1 of Spider-Man's Most Vital ing Characters
Spider-Man has seen a lot of death in his superhero career, but in one dark universe, Spidey just caused the death of a major ing character.
In Spider-Man: Reign 2 #1, it is suggested that Miles had a turbulent history with Kingpin, and possibly worked with the tyrant overlord before retiring. Kitty and Miles’ brief interaction presents a divide between them and hints at how he hurt both her and her mother in the past. After the reveal of Miles and Kitty's history, the kiss between Kitty and old Peter in Spider-Man Reign 2 #1 makes me shutter not only because he’s much older than her, but because she’s the daughter of Peter’s ex-girlfriend and former student.
I'm Fascinated By This Unexpected Miles Morales/Felicia Hardy Twist
Spider-Man Reign 2 #1-3 – Available Now From Marvel Comics
One reason I can’t believe Miles Morales and Felicia had a child together is because Miles and Felicia have yet to interact in the main Earth-616 story in any consequential way. The two have talked but only briefly, and Felicia is significantly older than Miles, which made their inferred coupling incredibly unpredictable – but that is what makes the Reign reimagining of Spider-Man lore so fascinating. The Reign Universe has drastically changed many qualities from the well-known Spider-Man lore, such as Mary Jane becoming the Reign Universe venom.

New Black Cat Debuts, As the Original's Daughter Gets Her Own Costume & Codename
Held captive 30 years in the future, Spider-Man is rescued by Kitty-Kat, the daughter of his ally and one-time love interest, Black Cat.
This is a hardened and older version of Miles Morales, but the age difference between Felicia Hardy and Miles leads me to believe Kitty and Felicia were taken in by Miles Morales, as opposed to a romance between Miles and Felicia. While Miles helping Kitty and Black Cat makes sense for his character, I think the entirety of the Spider-Man: Reign series proves the writers won't shy away from an uncomfortable story. Peter and Kitty Kat jumping into an alternate future to prevent an apocalypse has already changed the fate of many characters from the original story.
I Like How The New Black Cat Being Miles Morales’ Daughter Changes The Status Quo Of "Reign"
The Series Has Me Waiting For More Answers
Kitty-Kat is the first character from the Spider-Man: Reign series to play an active role in the story who hasn’t appeared in the main Marvel Universe, signifying a big departure from the original status quo. Though the first Spider-Man: Reign series was suffocatingly dark, I enjoyed the conclusive ending of Peter Parker returning as Spider-Man. Spider-Man: Reign 2 changed Spider-Man’s optimistic ending and reeled me back into its bleak world, in light of this, I hope the introduction of Kitty as Miles Morales’ daughter ends on a positive note rather than a dejected dystopic one.
Spider-Man: Reign 2 #4 will be available October 16, 2024 from Marvel Comics!
