Everything We Know About Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson in their feature directorial debuts with a script by Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Shang-Chi's David Callaham. For the sequel, these creatives crafted a story about a slightly older Miles Morales who teams up once again with Gwen Stacy (voiced by Hailee Steinfeld) to swing across dimensions, each with a distinct art style, where they meet more Spider-People and form a team known as the Spider-Force. However, when new threats such as the Spot emerge, Miles and the other Spider-People disagree on how to handle them, leading to a civil war.
Moore and Steinfeld return to lead the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse voice cast along with Jake Johnson as Peter B. Parker, who now has a daughter with Mary Jane Watson named Mayday, and Oscar Isaac who takes an expanded role as Miguel O'Hara aka Spider-Man 2099 after making a cameo during the first film's post-credits scene. There are several exciting additions to the cast, including Insecure's Issa Rae as Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman, who loves to ride motorcycles, and Nope's Daniel Kaluuya as Hobart Brown/Spider-Punk, a British version of the web-slinger who plays the electric guitar. For the sequel, Lord and Miller estimate that about 240 different Spider-Man variants appear on-screen.
The sequel also marks Jason Schwartzman's debut as the Spot, the main villain whose skin, as seen above, is covered in polka dots which are actually interdimensional portals. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse releases in theaters on June 2, 2023, while a third film, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, is already scheduled for March 29, 2024. Co-director Kemp Powers has confirmed the Spot will return as the villain in Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. While much about the Spot's motives remain unclear, it's clear the villain will be a formidable one moving forward.
