Disney and Sony Pictures have had a tenuous partnership in bringing the web-slinger to the MCU. However, the partnership paid off as each of Spider-Man's films in the massive cinematic shared universe proved to be a hit. Although Spider-Man: No Way Home marked the conclusion of Tom Holland's first trilogy of films as Spider-Man, the MCU still has plans for the Queens-born superhero.

The Disney+ series was originally announced in November 2021 as a supposed prequel to the character's introduction in Captain America: Civil War. Led by head writer and executive producer Jeff Trammel, the show was reported to be an animated origin story of the MCU's Peter Parker. However, it has recently been announced that Tom Holland will not reprise his role and voice the titular hero. No other actors have been revealed as Holland's replacement for Spider-Man in the series.

Screen Rant is at this year's San Diego Comic-Con where new information about the MCU television prequel series, Spider-Man: Freshman Year, has been revealed. The animated Disney+ show will be released in 2024 and a season 2 has also been confirmed by Marvel Studios. The has also released concept art from the new series showcasing Peter Parker's faithful comic book style and a variety of early Spider-Man suits such as a rudimentary Spider-Man costume featuring crude web-shooters.

Spider-Man: Freshman Year is part of Marvel's ever-expanding slate of animated series including Marvel's What If...?, Marvel Zombies, and X-Men '97. With What If...? season 2 and X-Men '97 set for an early and fall 2023 release respectively, and Marvel Zombies and Spider-Man: Freshman Year also scheduled for a 2024 release, Disney+'s timetable is stuffed with an exorbitant amount of Marvel content.

Although anticipation is high for Spider-Man: Freshman Year, as it may shed some much-needed light on the MCU's hero's unknown origin story, new information from the indicates that the series may take place outside of the greater MCU canon. This revelation will give the writers more creative freedom as they will not be restricted by the limitations of the established MCU narrative, but it will disappoint any fans who wished that they could have learned more about Holland's Spider-Man superpower origins. With season 2 already confirmed, Marvel Studios must be confident that Spider-Man: Freshman Year will please audiences when it lands on Disney+ in 2024.
