Warning: Contains spoilers for Amazing Spider-Man #1

The new Amazing even the Green Goblin pales in comparison.

Lonnie Lincoln is an African American man affected by albinism who grew up in Harlem, attending the same school as Joe Robertson, Peter Parker's future friend and editor at The Daily Bugle. After a difficult childhood as "a black man trapped in a white man's skin," Lonnie became an enforcer for the Mob and worked his way up the ladder of New York's crime families, earning the nickname "Tombstone." After being exposed to an experimental gas, Tombstone gained super-strength and a near-indestructible skin. Over the years, Lonnie tussled with many New York heroes, especially Spider-Man and Daredevil. Thanks to his powers and ruthless attitude, he was able to become one of the crime bosses of the city, keeping his position even after Wilson Fisk (aka the Kingpin of crime) lost his office as mayor. Recently, Tombstone's daughter Janice (who was formerly the super-villain Beetle) got engaged to Joe's son, Randy, who is also Peter's friend and roommate.

In Amazing Spider-Man #1, by Zeb Wells, John Romita Jr, Scott Hanna, and Marcio Menyz, Peter stops a deal in which the Rose (another crime boss who is the Kingpin's son) was about to buy a Goblin Glider from Tombstone. The Rose uses the failed exchange as an excuse to attack Tombstone, blowing up his house. The gangster is unscathed thanks to his powers, but a crime war is going to start, and Tombstone blames it completely on Spider-Man. Knowing of his association with Peter Parker, Tombstone invites the young man in his car, in classic mob style, and delivers a chilling message to relay to the Web-Head: he is "his project" now, and he's going to show him "how the world really works."

Peter laughs at Tombstone's threat, but he should not be so dismissive as this could be one of the biggest dangers he has faced in recent years. First of all, Tombstone is not the usual supervillain who hatches complicated schemes or spends his time fighting heroes in a costume. He is a bonafide criminal, one who is used to murder, extortion, torture, and every other awful act that comes with the job. He is not afraid of "crossing the line" and has no intention of giving Spider-Man a fair fight. More importantly, he is dangerously close to Peter's private life. He knows of his connection with the hero, and he will surely try to use it as a tool in his war against Spider-Man. Tombstone knows that Randy Robertson is close to Peter, and he is certainly not above using his daughter's fiancé as an unwitting accomplice, a hostage, or worse.

Peter is confident about this new challenge because he sees it as a good distraction from his personal issues, such as the lack of a job or the fact that Mary Jane is married with kids. However, if he underestimates Tombstone, his life will get much worse. It is also interesting that Marvel has teased the return of Norman Osborn, the Green Goblin, in the issues of Amazing Spider-Man, and that Tombstone possesses a piece of Goblin technology. Regardless of what the connection between him and Norman Osborn is, Tombstone's unique skills and mindset as a mobster, and his access to Peter's personal life, mean that he will be able to harm Spider-Man even worse than the Green Goblin ever did.
