J.K. Simmons confirms other characters from past Sony franchises would show up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

As shown in the initial trailer for No Way Home, the film picks up where Far From Home left off. Afterward, Peter goes to Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) for help undoing Jameson's global reveal, leading to Strange attempting a spell to make the entire world forget Peter Parker is Spider-Man. Inevitably, the magic goes awry and opens the Multiverse. No Way Home will bring back villains from Sony's past, including Sandman, Lizard, Electro (Jamie Foxx), Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe), and Doc Ock (Alfred Molina). The latest trailer not only showcased many of the film's villains but confirmed Simmons would appear in more than just the beginning of the new Spider-Man film.

J.K. Simmons recently appeared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast and talked about reprising the role of the Daily Bugle editor in the MCU. When asked if he had to start portraying the MCU's Jameson from scratch, Simmons confirmed that No Way Home's character is different from Raimi's Spider-Man films. Read what he had to say below:

"You know what, I think it's a slightly different version," Simmons said. "Certainly, from the creators of the current iteration of the story, it's a very different character. To me, it's a slightly different character. It's the same blowhard; the same guy with less hair. Honestly, I kinda wish he had the same hair...The most important thing is that he's still the same blowhard and he does have the same damn mustache and cigar, at least. As is appropriate for that character, he's a little comic relief thing that gets sprinkled lightly into the movie."

J Jonah Jameson looking up in Spider-Man: No Way Home

Being that Simmons' Jameson is in the universe before Strange's spell, while No Way Home's villains may be from an alternate universe in the Multiverse, he is not. In the same way, Loki's main character is a variant of the trickster who met his end in Avengers: Infinity War. This new Jameson is likely a variant of the Daily Bugle Editor from Raimi's trilogy. However, as Simmons stresses, Jameson is still as hilariously cantankerous as ever despite his lack of hair. If any character were largely unaffected by the circumstances of an alternate universe, it would be Jameson. That being said, it's still unclear whether Molina, Foxx, and Dafoe are playing their exact characters from Sony's films. For example, Electro has undergone a drastic makeover since audiences last saw him in The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

No Way Home's latest trailer also addresses that most of its villains died fighting their respective Spider-Man. Many view the climactic appearance of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield's Spider-Men as a foregone conclusion—which would serve as the cherry atop a film paying homage to web-slinging cinema. The future of Peter Parker/Spider-Man is very much uncertain following No Way Home, with Holland only set to appear in one more non-solo MCU project, Sony building its universe of characters, and a Miles Morales film rumored to be in the works. Thankfully, Spider-Man: No Way Home looks to deliver in a big way, bringing back essentially every actor that helped make the franchise so beloved, not the least of which is Simmons.
