Abrams' Star Trek movies, lost his life in a vehicular accident in June 2016, just over a month before Star Trek Beyond was released in theaters. Simon Pegg co-wrote Star Trek Beyond with Doug Jung as well as played Scotty, and the film was dedicated to Yelchin and the late Leonard Nimoy.

I’d love to do more. Obviously, it’s been forever tainted because we lost Anton, and that was a really hard thing for everyone involved, and for the real world, let alone anything else. If we do come back, if there is another opportunity to come back, I’d love to. Because as we were saying earlier on, it’s a group of guys that I dearly, dearly love and don’t get to see very often… It would be good to get back together with them.

Fortuitously, Star Trek Beyond introduced a new character who could slide into Chekov's role on the Starship Enterprise. Sofia Boutella played Jaylah in Star Trek Beyond, adding a fascinating new alien female character to the USS Enterprise's crew. At the end of Star Trek Beyond, Jaylah was about to Starfleet. It would make perfect sense if Jaylah is serving aboard the Enterprise years later if Star Trek 4 happens.
