Five Seasons Of Lower Decks Is A Great Accomplishment
But hopefully this isn't the last we see of the Cerritos crew.
Reaching five seasons is an accomplishment for any television series, but it's especially remarkable in today's streaming age where shows are typically restricted to limited runs. Among other Star Trek shows, a five-season run is also an achievement. Famously, the five-year mission of Star Trek: The Original Series spanned just three seasons, and only the Trek shows of the 1990s – The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager – have exceeded five seasons with seven a piece. Of the Paramount+ shows, Star Trek: Discovery has also wrapped after five seasons, suggesting that milestone may become the new standard for modern Trek.
While Lower Decks is officially ending with season 5, this may not be the last time Mariner, Boimler, Tendi, Rutherford, or others from the Cerritos appear in a Star Trek property. Already, Tawny Newsome and Jack Quaid have played Mariner and Boimler in live-action during the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds crossover episode. With Strange New Worlds renewed for season 4 and the possibility for more, another crossover could happen in the future. The Lower Decks characters could also potentially return in an animated special or sequel, seeing as the comedy has proven there's an audience for its unique take on Trek.

10 Star Trek Characters We Want In Lower Decks’ Final Season
Star Trek: Lower Decks has the chance to bring in characters from all over Star Trek history for its final season. Here's a few we'd love to see.
Regardless of whether there will be more Lower Decks, its season 5 trailer suggests the show ends on a high note. Among the adventures teased are a visit from an alternate universe version of the Cerritos, potentially a riff on the franchise's iconic Mirror Universe. There are also a few deep cuts teased with what looks like the Cerritos crew in the decontamination chambers made famous on Star Trek: Enterprise and a scene of Mariner playing a flute, possibly a reference to the TNG episode, "The Inner Light". Altogether, Star Trek: Lower Decks season 5 looks to be another hilarious celebration of all things Star Trek that's sure to be a strong sendoff for the series.
Star Trek: Lower Decks season 5 premieres October 24 on Paramount+.

"Star Trek: Lower Decks" focuses on the crew serving on one of Starfleet's least important ships, the USS Cerritos, in 2380. Ensigns Mariner, Boimler, Rutherford and Tendi must keep up with their duties and their social lives, often while the ship is being rocked by a multitude of sci-fi anomalies. The ship's bridge crew includes Captain Carol Freeman, Commander Jack Ransom, Lieutenant Shaxs and Doctor T'Ana. This is the second animated spin-off in the franchise after 1973-74's "Star Trek: The Animated Series," but has a decidedly more adult tone and humor.
