As part of the franchise's San Diego Comic-Con , Paramount+ revealed that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 will feature a Lower Decks crossover episode. The story details of how the two shows will collide are being kept under wraps, but it was revealed that Tawny Newsome's Ensign Beckett Mariner and Jack Quaid's Ensign Brad Boimler will appear in live-action. However, the crossover episode will also feature both live-action and animation. The special Star Trek: Strange New Worlds crossover episode is set to be helmed by franchise veteran Jonathan Frakes.
Star Trek: Lower Decks has featured multiple live-action franchise characters crossover to the animated fold, namely Frakes' William Riker, who is expected to return in this summer's season 3, John de Lancie's Q and Marina Sirtis' Deanna Troi. ar Eugene Cordero recently hinted at the possibility of the animated show crossing over with live-action Star Trek shows, expressing his hope to make the leap as Sam Rutherford and saying that Paramount+ loves to expand the sci-fi universe. News of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 featuring a Lower Decks crossover episode is sure to excite fans of both shows, though does come with a minor wrinkle.
Unlike the animated show, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is set in the 23rd century, roughly a hundred years before the events of Lower Decks and, therefore, the existence of its character. Given the trailer for Star Trek: Lower Decks season 3 revealed the return of Deep Space Nine and its nearby wormhole, one could speculate that the crew of the USS Cerritos experience a malfunction traveling through the portal and travel through time, though with the story for the crossover episode confirming a use of both live-action and animation, it will be interesting to see if it's the Enterprise that travels through time. Only time will tell when Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 premieres next year.
