A clever detail in version of the Starship Enterprise before Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner, Paul Wesley) takes over. Strange New Worlds boasts an impressive cast of characters, including returning characters from Star Trek: The Original Series.

Anson Mount's Captain Pike was already a fan favorite after Star Trek: Discovery season 2, and his similar success in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is thanks in part to the incredible team of creatives working behind the scenes. Star Trek TV shows have often used callbacks to Star Trek: The Original Series as a means to honor the franchise's source material, without which they wouldn't exist. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds honors its predecessor with easy-to-miss set details that you probably didn't notice.

Strange New Worlds Set Details Pay Homage To Captain Pike's Love Of Horses

Intricate Set Details That Call Back To TOS Are Amazing But Easy To Miss

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' series premiere re-introduced audiences to Captain Pike, last seen at the end of Star Trek: Discovery season 2. Strange New Worlds' premiere features Pike caring for and riding a horse. This is a callback to Star Trek: The Original Series' first pilot "The Cage", in which Captain Pike – in a Talosian illusion – finds himself back home in Mojave, along with his two horses: Tango and Mary Lou. However, the smaller, less conspicuous details are more impressive.

Pike's personal areas on the ship are full of facets of his life on Earth and connect him to his past, offsetting the horror of Pike's dark future.

Captain Pike's office and ready room on the USS Enterprise offer a look into Chris' past and ions. Though not shown except in the background, Captain Pike's desk features miniature sculptures of horses and other items from Mojave, similar to his ready room in Star Trek: Discovery. Additionally, Pike has a real saddle in his office, presumably his own from Earth.

Strange New Worlds' Anson Mount Traded Pike's Horse For The Captain's Kitchen

Pike Needed Another Beloved Hobby Aboard The Enterprise

The equine details on the set of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds are charmingly inconspicuous, but a bigger detail about Captain Pike has become a show staple. Since the beginning of the series, the kitchen in Pike's quarters has worked as a casual meeting place for the Starship Enterprise's senior staff. Pike's kitchen quickly became a place where the captain could get to know new and old of the crew. The origin of Captain Pike's Enterprise kitchen came from Anson Mount himself, who wanted something on the ship that represented Pike's ions – since a horse in space is frowned upon.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is dedicated to honoring Star Trek's origin in ways that won't always feel like an obvious attempt at baiting for nostalgia. The intricate details of the sets make the Enterprise feel less like a spaceship and more like a home, which mirrors Captain Pike's warm and familial relationship with his crew. The details in Pike's personal areas of the ship not only add a touch of the character's sentiment toward his home, but they also provide Star Trek: Strange New Worlds with a subtle but clever callback to the franchise's beginning.
