One of the first pieces of fan art to surface online is via Reddit "samdickwit", who posted a concept of the "Renperor" in a wildly different look from what he wore in the first two films. This version of Kylo is still wearing the same familiar long, black uniform, but this time with metal armor plates on his chest and shoulders. Comments pointed out that the silver makes him look closer to Darth Revan, a popular Old Republic character depicted in material outside the movies. Check out the fan art below:
Official concept art for Kylo Ren in The Last Jedi reveals that he almost went from his distinctive long hair to a actually served a purpose). With Kylo overpowering General Hux (Domnhall Gleeson) and assuming the mantle of leadership in the First Order, it would make sense for him to at least take on a striking new look that signifies his increased power.
The more metallic, heavily armored uniform for Kylo Ren as Supreme Leader shows that he's taken on more importance as a figure who needs to survive in order for the First Order to continue its reign. It makes him appear more king-like and his added protection could certainly make him a more formidable fighter in Episode IX. Perhaps his run-in with Snoke's Praetorian Guards will make him want to protect himself more than he has in the past.
This design will be far from the only one to emerge over the next year-plus as fans begin to speculate what Kylo Ren will look like and how the character will evolve with his newfound power. One thing's for certain, Star Wars: The Last Jedi completely subverted expectations not just for him but for the whole saga. Now that Kylo has said goodbye to old things heading into Episode IX, there are a wide range of directions for Abrams to take with him and his appearance.
