The dynamic between Kleya and Luthen between Star Wars' best TV show.

Where Luthen and Kleya are concerned, Andor season 1 and the beginning of season 2 established what many thought was a clear dynamic. Luthen was set to be a leader and founder of Andor season 2's story eventually flipped the script and altered their dynamic, as explained by Tony Gilroy,

Andor Season 2 Revealed Kleya Was Really The One In Charge All Along

Kleya Had More Agency Than First Thought

As per Tony Gilroy's own words, Andor season 2 flipped Kleya and Luthen's dynamic by revealing that the former was more in charge of rebellious actions than first thought. In an interview with Decider, Gilroy explored the backstory of Luthen and Kleya shown in Andor season 2, episode 10. When talking about the young actress for Kleya in the flashback scenes, Gilroy stated that he needed to find someone who could "deliver what is really a very complicated, very complicated idea,”

The idea in question is that Kleya has always been the one in charge of her and Luthen's rebellion, not the other way around: “The young girl is actually the dominant one. She’s actually in control. Luthen’s not in control." Gilroy stated this was to avoid the risk of it looking like Luthen was manipulating Kleya, hence the scene in episode 10 where the duo speaks about this exact thing, leading Kleya to start making the decisions. Gilroy ed this idea in an interview with Collider:

“The girl who plays her [Kleya] young, April Woods, holy crap! She just transfused that steel all the way through, and you realize Kleya is the organizing principle in that shop, Kleya is the muscle there, Kleya is the stalwart... She is his transformation, and that's a pretty unusual story to be able to tell.”

This marks a big difference from what Andor season 1 and even the beginning of Andor season 2 teased. Many assumed Luthen was the leader and that Kleye was simply his helper, but Andor season 2's ending made it clear the opposite was true, just as Gilroy intended it to be.

Luthen Was The Face Of Kleya's Rebellion, Not The Leader

Luthen Put Himself Out There, But He Could Never Have Done It Without Kleya

These developments, and the confirmation of Gilroy's intention to depict it, recontextualize the entire dynamic Luthen and Kleya possessed in Andor. Before Andor season 2's conclusion, many would have been in agreement that Luthen was indeed the leader of their two-person rebellion and that Kleya was responsible for almost less than he was. While, in some cases such as Aldhani, this will certainly have been the case, Andor season 2's exploration changes this viewpoint to position Luthen as simply the face of the rebellion, with Kleya as the mastermind.

Andor season 2 just saw a return to Pe's home plant of Naboo 26 years after Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, and it's perfect.

This is not to say that Luthen did nothing at all, just as nobody assumed Kleya did in Andor season 1. However, now we know Luthen was the person who went out into the galaxy and interacted with people and who was known as the face of a facet of rebellion, while Kleya was the orchestrator. Their dialogue in the second arc of Andor season 2 proves as much, with Luthen telling Kleya they are doing too much and that he cannot keep track, leading him to be the face and distraction to the Imperials while Kleya removed a listening device from one of Davo Sculdun's antiquities.

Kleya was simply seen as Luthen's assistant by Dedra and forgotten about until it was too late, resulting in knowledge about the Death Star being ed to Cassian...

At the end of the day, this means that Dedra Meero missed the true Axis. Luthen was Axis just as much as Kleya, but only at face value. Kleya was simply seen as Luthen's assistant by Dedra and forgotten about until it was too late, resulting in knowledge about the Death Star being ed to Cassian and, thus, the Rebellion.

Will Kleya Be Part Of The Rebel Alliance Now?

Gilroy Has His Own Ideas

Given that Kleya survived Andor season 2 and is on Yavin IV in the final scene, the question now is whether she will be an official part of the Rebel Alliance. Gilroy somewhat commented on this too, when talking about Andor's survivors and the original trilogy. Although he does not say exactly what became of Kleya, he states that she is beginning to feel that, without her, Yavin IV would not exist in her final scene. This makes Andor's final appearance for Kleya more important, as, despite not feeling welcome there, she knows the role she - and Luthen - played in making it a reality.
