Summary

  • Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection has had a disappointing launch due to severe lag issues and crashing sessions, affecting multiplayer modes.
  • Only three servers were available at launch causing chaos for 10,000 players, but more servers were added within an hour.
  • Single-player modes remain unaffected by server issues, offering iconic moments from original and prequel trilogies.

The highly anticipated Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection's launch hasn't gone as expected, with many players negatively reviewing the game. Pandemic Studios' original 2000s-era Star Wars: Battlefront titles were extremely well received upon their original launch two decades ago, with a wealth of multiplayer modes, and enjoyable single-player campaigns. Therefore, many fans were eager to revisit them on modern devices through Aspyr's new remaster.

Unfortunately, as of the time of writing, the Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection currently has a "Mostly Negative" review score on Steam. Most of these complaints seem to be due to severe lag, or entire sessions crashing, making the return of the game's 64-player multiplayer modes completely redundant.

Star Wars: Battlefront Only Launched With Three Servers

These Servers Couldn't Handle Player Demand

As shared by CultureCrave on X, over 10,000 people tried to play the Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection on its launch night, but only three multiplayer servers were available, each allowing up to 64 players, coming to a total of just 192 spaces at any given time. While this may have been acceptable for a title in 2004, that number is extremely low in the modern gaming space and is something Aspyr should have amended before launch.

Fortunately, the servers were fixed within an hour of launch, with Aspyr adding more official servers and community ones finally showing in the browser. This isn't the first time demand for a multiplayer title has exceeded what the developers anticipated. Just recently, Helldivers 2 experienced similar issues where there weren't enough servers available for the 300,000+ concurrent players trying to access the game on Steam, which has since been remedied by its developers.

Fortunately, this hasn't seemed to impact Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection's single-player modes, which can still be enjoyed offline. These modes cover many iconic moments from Star Wars' original and prequel trilogies and are definitely worth exploring. With Aspyr already having added more capacity to the game, hopefully, the studio will look to further upgrade the title to the level that modern player bases expect, as when it does work, the multiplayer modes on offer can be extremely enjoyable, which is why fans have kept them alive in the original titles on PC for 20 years.
