One of Disney's canceled Star Wars anthology movies would have been a Boba Fett movie, which director James Mangold has confirmed would have been the franchise's first R-rated film should Disney have allowed for that. Mangold is no stranger to Lucasfilm despite not working on the Boba Fett movie that was planned in the same vein as Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Solo: A Star Wars Story. The director has finalized Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny before going on to work on the planned "Dawn of the Jedi" film announced at Star Wars Celebration 2023.
During the press junket for Indiana Jones 5, Mangold appeared on the Dawn of the Jedi Star Wars movie was in development. When asked if his Boba Fett script was anything like The Mandalorian or The Book of Boba Fett which have since seen the infamous Star Wars bounty hunter revitalized, Mangold had this to say:
"Well at the point I was doing it... I was probably making much more of a borderline rated-R... single-planet Spaghetti Western... the world would never be able to embrace Baby Yoda if I had made that, because it didn't really belong in the world I was envisioning."
This is certainly an intriguing insight from Mangold, whose concept for a Boba Fett movie sounds incredibly exciting. An almost R-rated Spaghetti Western entirely based on one world sounds like a premise that would allow the titular character to shine, and this great idea is likely a huge reason as to why Lucasfilm has continued to work with James Mangold for Star Wars' Jedi origins once plans for a Boba Fett movie fell through.
The Canceled Spinoff Would've Been Better Than Book Of Boba Fett
From the sounds of things, the canceled Boba Fett movie sounds much more promising than The Book of Boba Fett ended up being. While The Book of Boba Fett was an enjoyable series, there is no denying that the problems the project had stemmed from its inability to focus solely on the titular character. Boba Fett's story was upended by a need to fit into the world of The Mandalorian, which meant a lot of the spotlight was taken away from Temuera Morrison's Boba Fett. From Luke Skywalker and Grogu to Din Djarin's Mandalorian, the series departed Tatooine and left its central character in the lurch for long periods.
With Mangold's canceled film though, it sounds like this would not have been the case. In pitching the movie as a single-planet film, it is clear that Mangold wished to keep the focus on Boba's story and contain it to one planet. While Disney may not have adhered to this, nor Mangold's near-R-rating, the concept sounds refreshing in that it is a different, unique take on both Star Wars and Boba Fett. Regardless of the fact the film was never made, hopefully, Star Wars' future has a similar unique perspective when Mangold finally begins production on his Dawn of the Jedi project.
