Summary
- Boba Fett's character development in the modern canon diverges from the original version, moving him away from his Mandalorian roots.
- The Book of Boba Fett disappointed viewers by not showcasing the character's iconic traits, making him appear as an inadequate crime lord.
- The future of Boba Fett in live-action Star Wars properties remains uncertain, with no confirmed plans for his return as of now.
Boba Fett starred in his first live-action Star Wars property in the Disney+ series Boba escape the sarlacc after Return of the Jedi.
Boba Fett made his full return to the Star Wars franchise in Tom Veitch and Cam Kennedy’s Star Wars: Dark Empire comics.
The modern Star Wars canon, which began in 2014, left Boba Fett with a relatively clean slate initially. Boba Fett is no longer a Mandalorian like his original incarnation, and it took years for the newer timeline to reveal that he escaped the sarlacc pit. 2020’s The Mandalorian season 2 brought Boba Fett back to the realm of live action, with Temuera Morrison of Jango Fett fame excellently playing the coveted role, which in turn set up his own spinoff TV show – The Book of Boba Fett. Sadly, The Book of Boba Fett left many viewers disappointed.

A perfect clone of bounty hunter Jango Fett, Boba Fett inherited his father's profession and operated as a bounty hunter through the Clone Wars and the Dark Times of the Empire's reign. Believed killed on Tatooine, he survived and sought redemption of sorts after he was helped by native Tusken Raiders. In The Mandalorian era, Boba Fett now operates as a crime lord - having taken over Jabba the Hutt's old empire.

The Book Of Boba Fett Cast Guide: Every New & Returning Star Wars Character
Disney+'s The Book of Boba Fett promises classic Star Wars action with a cast of returning and new characters, as well as familiar faces and voices.
The Book Of Boba Fett Did Lasting Damage To The Character
Despite starring one of the most popular Star Wars original trilogy characters – who had a wellspring of Legends-era adventures to inspire modern canon stories – The Book of Boba Fett was underwhelming and, for many viewers, failed to depict Boba Fett’s most iconic traits. Boba Fett’s post-credits teaser at the end of The Mandalorian season 2 set him up as a fledgling crime lord, implying that the ruthlessness and cunning ingenuity that he and his father were known for in the Legends continuity would be shown prominently in the spinoff. Instead, Boba lacked his signature brutality and aura of mystery.
While Temuera Morrison and Ming-Na Wen’s performances are the show’s highlights, Boba Fett as a character has suffered from the series.
The Book of Boba Fett depicts Fett as a rather impotent crime lord who struggles to earn the respect of Din Djarin for two episodes – is unfocused. Boba Fett’s formidability as a bounty hunter is even retroactively damaged by his inability to defeat Cad Bane in a standoff. While Temuera Morrison and Ming-Na Wen’s performances are the show’s highlights, Boba Fett as a character has suffered from the series.
Boba Fett's Future Is A Question Mark Right Now
For the time being, it is unknown when Temuera Morrison will reprise the role of Boba Fett in a live-action Star Wars property. There has yet to be an announcement of The Mandalorian season 4, but how the film’s announcement and production might have altered these season 4 plans is unknown for now.
In the meantime, Temuera Morrison has continued to play other roles in live-action Star Wars TV shows. The Obi-Wan Kenobi series saw Morrison portray the homeless veteran clone trooper Nax – wearing the Star Wars franchise’s first physical clone trooper armor – and Ahsoka had him play the iconic clone Captain Rex in the character’s live-action debut. Seeing Morrison return in future TV shows as various clone troopers is expected, yet it is unclear when he might play Boba Fett again.

Star Wars Shows: Story, Casts & Everything We Know
Several exciting Star Wars TV shows are set to be released on Disney+ in the coming years from the realm of both live-action and animation.
Boba Fett's Story Is Still Unfinished, & Will Surely Be Returned To
The Book of Boba Fett left its titular anti-hero’s story unfinished, and considering how Boba Fett’s character developed in the Legends continuity, the modern canon could take his character in fascinating directions. In the Legends continuity, Boba Fett was a Mandalorian, but he left his mercenary ways behind him and fully embraced his culture years after Return of the Jedi, succeeding Fenn Shysa as the Mand’alor. While Fett succeeding Bo-Katan Kryze as the Mand’alor is highly unlikely, a future appearance could have Boba Fett undergo a character arc in which he s the Mandalorians.
Boba Fett was dismissive of the Mandalorian ways in The Book of Boba Fett, yet he continues to wear his father’s beskar armor, albeit for sentimental and practical reasons. The modern canon may have rewritten Boba Fett as not being a Mandalorian, but Jango Fett remains a Mandalorian foundling and veteran of the Mandalorian Civil Wars. Boba Fett is growing into the role of an honorable mercenary, despite his unscrupulous past, and Mandalorian culture might become an outlet for his newfound sense of ethics in a future appearance.
