Warning: SPOILERS for The Book of Boba Fett episode 1.
Return of the Jedi. Boba Fett makes quick work of Bib Fortuna, killing the Twi'lek without hesitation. After that, he takes his place on Jabba the Hutt's throne, and Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen) sits by his side.
One of the most anticipated storylines of Book of Boba Fett involves fixing a plot hole in 1983's Return of the Jedi. The bounty hunter embarrassingly falls into the Sarlacc pit and supposedly dies in the film. The monster even belches to solidify the point. However, The Mandalorian retcons the death, showing the character survived the Sarlacc pit. Unfortunately, despite multiple Boba Fett appearances in The Mandalorian, the series never adequately explains his survival. Ahead of Book of Boba Fett, Morrison itted he didn't even know how Boba Fett survived the Sarlacc.
The Boba Fett premiere answers the Sarlacc question and fixes some Star Wars mistakes as well. In the episode, Boba Fett has dreams about his past, and one of them involves his Sarlacc escape. After waking up inside the beast, the bounty hunter got oxygen from a dead Stormtrooper that the monster also consumed. He then used fire to blast his way out of the Sarlacc, though the ordeal left him clinging to life. Besides showing Boba Fett's struggle with the Sarlacc, the episode also makes a notable change. George Lucas added a beak on the spiked Sarlacc pit in the 1997 Special Edition of Return of the Jedi. However, the beak, which has been derided online by Star Wars fans, doesn't appear in the Boba Fett series.
The Book of Boba Fett has a perfectly logical excuse for excluding the Sarlacc beak. After all, the Bounty Hunter certainly dies in the original version of Return of the Jedi. So the entire Disney+ series is based on the idea of retconning Boba Fett's story. With that in mind, the filmmakers have leeway to retcon other elements to fit the new narrative. Since many of George Lucas' Star Wars tweaks, including the Sarlacc beak, weren't necessarily beloved, there's no reason to emphasize those changes in the Boba Fett premiere.
Nevertheless, this doesn't mean the Sarlacc beak is gone for good. The Sarlacc beak is still in the version of Return of the Jedi airing on Disney+ as of publishing time. Therefore, the feature is likely still a part of the Star Wars creature. The Book of Boba Fett simply doesn't feature that part of the Sarlacc in its retelling of the bounty hunter's survival. So the beak is probably still there. However, as Obi-Wan Kenobi might say, that's just from a certain point of view.
The Book of Boba Fett streams Wednesdays on Disney+.
