Over the years since its release, due to various factors such as time to marinate, Star Wars prequel trilogy has become an even more beloved part of the iconic saga. Despite a lot of issues many have with the execution of the films, the story, the characters, and what it adds to the canon are all brilliant, giving so much to the lore.
One of the most vilified aspects of the prequels has been the dialog. Despite so often being cheesy and poorly written in general, there is a slew of memorable character quotes. And with that in mind, what were the first line introductions and the last lines of each main character in the films?
Qui-Gon Jinn
Qui-Gon Jinn only appears in the first film of the prequel trilogy, but he is the most prominent character of the movie and an essential part of the overall prequel story. His first line is simply "Captain." followed by "Tell them we wish to board at once." as he and Obi-Wan go to deal with of the Trade Federation at the start of the film.
As for his final line, this comes after the incredible Duel of the Fates as he dies in Obi-Wan's arms, telling him to train Anakin, with his last breath saying, "He is the chosen one. He will bring balance. Train him." of course, in reference to Anakin Skywalker.
Shmi Skywalker
Shmi Skywalker is not the first character who comes to mind when most people think of the prequel trilogy. However, she is still crucial to the story of Anakin Skywalker, and a kind soul, whose first line in The Phantom Menace is at dinner with Qui-Gon and company; "All slaves have a transmitter placed inside their bodies somewhere."
Like Qui-Gon, Shmi also does not make it through the trilogy, ing away in Attack of the Clones in what has become an iconic scene, with her dying words being "I... I love." unable to tell Anakin properly before ing.
Mace Windu
Mace Windu is one of the most badass and interesting Jedi of the prequel era and is a constant throughout the trilogy and The Clone Wars, with his first line in The Phantom Menace exemplifying his almost unbearable hubris: "I do not believe the Sith could have returned without us knowing" after Qui-Gon brings the threat of Darth Maul before the Jedi Council.
Mace did make it to Revenge Of The Sith, killed by Palpatine in their duel together, which kicked off Darth Vader's life as a Sith (although many fans still hope Windu will return). The Jedi's final words other than his screams of pain was the well-known line, "He's too dangerous to be left alive."
General Grievous
Keeping up the secondary villain trend per movie, General Grievous debuted in Revenge Of The Sith with some fantastic lines and memorable (or meme-able) scenes. But his very first line is simply "What's the situation, Captain?" as he awaits the arrival of Anakin and Obi-Wan.
Grievous did not make it out of the movie alive, of course, falling to Obi-Wan on Utapau in a battle with some of the most iconic Star Wars quotes ever. His final words before being shot in the chest by Obi-Wan later in the duel were, "Army or not; you must realize you are doomed."
Count Dooku
Another secondary villain of the trilogy was the elegant Count Dooku, otherwise known as Darth Tyranus, who was pretty great across the prequels and animated shows. He debuted in Attack Of The Clones, with his first line being very politics-heavy as he talks to other Separatists: "We must persuade the Commerce Guild and the Corporate Alliance to sign the treaty."
The former Jedi's death comes early in Revenge Of The Sith as Anakin beheads him, with his final line being towards Anakin as they duel "I sense great fear in you, Skywalker. You have hate. You have anger. But you don't use them."
Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine
Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine, who would go on to become the Emperor, also known as Darth Sidious, is another constant in the Skywalker saga, with his first line in the prequels being as his true persona in a hologram to Nute Gunray, "What is it?", sounding annoyed when Gunray calls on him.
Sidious, of course, survives the prequels, going on to rule over the Galaxy with an iron fist, with his final words coming after the film's climax as Darth Vader as he is in the iconic suit is born, with Sidious telling him that Pé has died; "It seems in your anger, you killed her."
Yoda
One of the most iconic and beloved characters of the franchise is also a standout prequel era character, with Yoda having a fairly significant role in all three movies, starting with a first-line in his iconic voice, "Ah, hard to see the Dark Side is." a response to Windu's confident line mentioned earlier.
Yoda thankfully survives his duel with Sidious, going into exile on Dagobah after the film's events, but not before revealing to Obi-Wan secrets of the Force that he and Qui-Gon uncovered. He tells Obi-Wan he has training for him on Tatooine, with his final line being "How to commune with him I will teach you." in reference to Qui-Gon.
Pé Amidala
Pé Amidala is an often criticized character for her portrayal and overall role in the prequels, but she has definitely grown in popularity as the era is expanded on. Before switching roles with her decoy handmaiden Sabé, Pé's first line is to the Trade Federation blockading Naboo, saying, "You will not be so pleased when you hear what I have to say Viceroy."
For fans of the character, Pé's death is a heartbreaking one, even if many people have logical issues with it. Dying while giving birth to two of the greatest heroes and characters Star Wars will ever know, Pé's last words are tearjerkers, "There's still good in him. I know... I know there's still..." before succumbing to her heartbreak.
Obi-Wan Kenobi
Undoubtedly the best performance of the prequel trilogy and arguably the best overall character, all things considered, comes from Ewan McGregor's Obi-Wan Kenobi, whose first line is an iconic one as a Padawan in The Phantom Menace, "I have a bad feeling about this."
Obi-Wan's final words come in the aforementioned conversation with Yoda about training on Tatooine in the lessons of the Force Yoda and Qui-Gon uncovered, with his last line of the trilogy being a shocked "Qui-Gon?"
Anakin Skywalker
Anakin first appears as a child in The Phantom Menace, and his first line is in Huttese, "Me tassa cho-a!" which translates to "I was cleaning the fan switches."
Anakin has two separate final lines in the trilogy, Anakin's and Darth Vader's. Anakin's are debatable, depending on the moment it is believed he turns fully. Before helping kill Mace Windu, it is a scream of "No!" Anakin's last words not fully in the Darth Vader suit are easily believed to be "I hate you!" directed at Obi-Wan, but, before he is fully suited up, Anakin lets out a "Pé, help me." as the helmet comes down over his burned face. As Darth Vader, his final line is the well-ed "Noooooo!" of James Earl Jones.
