To say that and underrated show, is itself an understatement, as the show is of such quality that it may be the most underrated piece of content to come out of the franchise in the new canon. Despite many fans having a severe dislike of him in the early seasons, a significant part of the show, and some of its best parts, is Ezra Bridger.
Ezra is as close to a central protagonist as the show has, and grows a lot throughout the show. While many fans still do not like the character, there are so many ways in which he gets better and better.
ed The Ghost Crew
The Rebels focuses on Ezra, nothing more than a Loth-rat, and his running into the Ghost Crew, which he eventually gets given an ultimatum to by Kanan.
Ezra was another Star Wars protagonist who dreamt of more, of both going to the stars, but also helping his people. ing the Ghost Crew improved his life immensely, and the lives of so many others on Lothal.
Training To Become A Jedi
A big reason for Kanan's interest in Ezra was sensing how strong the Force was within him. Ezra was no Anakin or Luke by any means but was still clearly full of potential.
Kanan agrees to train Ezra to become a Jedi, and the two's relationship blossoms into something great from there as a fantastic Master/Apprentice dynamic, as well as Ezra's potential coming to fruition.
Skill
Throughout his training with Kanan, and the four seasons of the show, Ezra's skill, and ability are consistently on the rise, improving continually.
His skill with a lightsaber gets better and better, despite not getting many opponents and getting quickly disposed of by Vader. So too does his Force ability, with his connection with it getting stronger, and the capabilities he draws from it likewise.
Lightsabers
Ezra, like so many other Jedi, has multiple lightsabers throughout Rebels, wielding two, with his first one, getting destroyed by the sheer power of Vader.
Getting a lightsaber is a real improvement for Ezra. It showed he was officially more; he was, at the very least, Jedi-adjacent. His first unique blaster-saber was very Ezra, with his second more traditional blade mirroring Ezra's own growth.
Friendships
The most significant improvement in Ezra's life when he ed the Ghost Crew, out with his newfound purpose and Jedi training, was the family.
Found family is such a consistently prominent theme throughout Star Wars, and it is so evident through Rebels, with Ezra at the center of that as a boy who lost his family, who was alone, who found the best of friends, brothers, sisters, and parent figures in the crew of the Ghost.
Connection With Creatures
Ezra may not be the most powerful Jedi of all time, but he does not need to be, that is not his destiny, his purpose. But, he was a strong Jedi, a powerful one with the unique ability to connect mentally with the creatures on Lothal.
Kanan makes significant efforts to try and build this power in Ezra, to harness it and allow him to use it when needed. Ezra went from an inability to control it, to be able to control it to aid him and the crew in life and death situations.
Started Focusing On His Journey
For a significant portion of Rebels, the show branched out to the wider Galaxy, to higher issues such as the full rebellion, or for Ezra, dealing with Maul and going to warn Obi-Wan.
However, at the advice of Obi-Wan, Ezra realizes that to do his part, to fulfill whatever destiny he has in the fight against the Empire, he must go home to Lothal. Ezra has his own role, and when he gets sent back on it, everything becomes clearer for him.
Growing Up & Maturing
Like so many Star Wars characters, namely young, naive, central protagonists such as himself, Ezra has a lot of growing up to do when we first meet him.
Over the course of the show, Ezra grows up incredibly. Less hotheaded, less angry and frustrated, more peaceful, and far more mature, Ezra ends the show a different person. Hopefully, we see who he has grown into following his taking of Thrawn in the finale.
Getting Rid Of Thrawn
Speaking of taking Thrawn away, that came in "Family Reunion - and Farewell," the series finale of the show, in an incredible episode, and an excellent example of Ezra's abilities and growth.
Rather than even attempting to kill Thrawn with a lightsaber or the Force, Ezra uses the Purrgils to take Thrawn away, helping the Galaxy incredibly and removing one of the most lethal and important Imperial Officers from the Empire, freeing Lothal from him, and helping prevent Thrawn's plans.
Liberating Lothal
The personal, contained story of Rebels has gotten mentioned numerous times, in that the main focus of the show, especially at the bookends, revolves around Lothal, Ezra's home planet.
Ezra did his entire planet a service, alongside the rest of the Ghost crew and the rebels on the world, by liberating it, giving a small victory to the rebellion. He liberated Lothal and beautifully completed that personal arc.
