Several classic Star Wars games are returning to modern consoles this year, including fan favorites like Star Wars: Jedi Academy, Star Wars Episode 1: Racer, and Star Wars: Republic Commando. The Star Wars franchise has spawned countless video games in the decades since Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope first wowed audiences back in 1977, with many spanning several different genres and time periods across the far-reaching Star Wars timeline.

Chief among these games is the Star Wars: Jedi Knight series, which put players in the role of former-Imperial Stormtrooper-turned-Rebel-hero Kyle Katarn as he battled against the Empire’s Dark Troopers and other Sith-related threats utilizing what many fans consider to be the best Star Wars lightsaber combat system to date. There was also Star Wars Episode I: Racer, a high-speed racing title that overcame the stigma attached to the divisive The Phantom Menace and satisfied players who wished to jump behind the controls of a twin-engine Podracer. Finally, there’s Star Wars: Republic Commando, a squad-based first-person shooter that told the story of an elite team of Clone Troopers as they battled across the dark and gritty corners of the Clone Wars.

Aspyr is no stranger to the Star Wars franchise, having previously worked on PC ports of titles like Star Wars: The Force Unleashed and brought Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic to mobile phones in 2014. More importantly, the developer is currently working on the long-awaited Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic Remake, a current-gen update to the classic RPG that took many fans by surprise when it was first announced during last month’s PlayStation Showcase.

Although games like Star Wars: Jedi Academy and Star Wars: Republic Commando are no longer part of the official Star Wars continuity, they are still memorable gameplay experiences fans of the franchise should check out. They will get the chance to do so soon, when Aspyr releases the Star Wars Jedi Knight Collection and Star Wars Racer and Commando Combo on the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 later this year.
