So, what does a group of warriors as powerful as the Jedi fear? Well, Star Wars just answered that question.

In a preview for Star Wars: The High Republic - Fear of the Jedi #1 by Cavan Scott and Marika Cresta, the Jedi are answering a distress call put out by innocent citizens of the Republic who are traveling too close to the Occlusion Zone and are being attacked by Nihil Marauders. The Nihil have successfully taken over a large portion of the Star Wars galaxy and sectioned it off, and that area is known as the Occlusion Zone. The Jedi are working to take it back, and they’ll help anyone they see suffering by the hand of the Nihil along the way.

The preview shows these Jedi helping the poor aliens in trouble, setting the stage for an exciting issue to come. However, the real ‘meat’ of this preview isn’t found in the illustrated pages, but rather the opening crawl (and official synopsis), where it’s revealed exactly what the Jedi are up against, and how important it is that they come out on top. But, more than that, this preview reveals the greatest fear of the Jedi - or, perhaps it would be more accurate to say ‘fears’, as there’s certainly more than one.

The Nameless, The Blight, & The Nihil as a Whole - THAT’S What Scares the Jedi

The Jedi Must Conquer All of Their Fears to Save the Star Wars Galaxy

One question fans may have at this point in time is this: how did a gang of what are essentially space pirates secure a portion of the galaxy from the Republic and the Jedi? Well, one of the first ‘weapons’ the Nihil used was actually an entire species of creatures called the Nameless. One Nihil Marauder named Marchion Ro has the ability to control the Nameless, which are immensely strong monsters that consume the Force by eating Force-sensitive individuals, and Ro has weaponized the Nameless against the Jedi.

At the same time, a mysterious infection is moving from planet to planet across the galaxy, draining each world of life. That mysterious infection is known as the Blight, and it’s weakening the Republic by eliminating entire planets, thereby diverting the Republic's attention from its war with the Nihil, and giving the Nihil that much more of an advantage. So, while the government is being weakened by the Blight, the Jedi are getting slaughtered by the Nameless, and the Nihil continue their march across the galaxy.

Right now, the Jedi have to rid the Nameless of the Nihil’s control, find a way to stop the Blight, and breach the Occlusion Zone to defeat the Nihil once and for all. How? This new series is a continuation of the ongoing High Republic storyline that’s spread out across a number of Star Wars titles, and in this latest chapter, the Jedi are not only going to face their fears, they’re going to have to conquer them.
