Warning! This post contains a PREVIEW for Star Wars #33Despite being best known for wielding a blue or green saber, Return of the Jedi. Now, a first look at cover art for Star Wars #33 appears to hint at the fate of this lost lightsaber.

Written by Charles Soule with interior art by Madibek Musabekov, the cover art for Star Wars #33 by Stephen Segovia shows Luke crouched to the ground, holding the grip of his yellow saber, now slashed in half with the emitter on the floor.

In a new cover for Star Wars #33, Luke Skywalker crouches on the floor while holding his broken yellow lightsaber as Darth Vader's red blade looms over him

The hand of (presumably) Darth Vader looms over Luke, with Vader's red lightsaber lit in his grip. But Vader may not be the only movie characters to have a hand in destroying yet another of Luke's lightsabers.

Where Did Luke Skywalker Get His Yellow Lightsaber?

star wars luke skywalker weapon yellow lightsaber

After losing his original lightsaber in the infamous Cloud City confrontation with Darth Vader, Luke grew uncertain with his role as a Jedi, shaken by the crushing weight of what he had learned. For a time, this left him without a lightsaber. Eventually, he overcame his trauma, searching for a weapon to replace (or to simply retrieve) the one tragically lost. He initially tried to a yellow lightsaber from the High Republic era.

One obvious question has permeated Star Wars' flagship comic since Luke first lit his yellow blade: What happened to it between now and Return of the Jedi? Though the aforementioned Star Wars #33 cover seems to be the most concrete sign of the saber's fate, the comic has long prepared fans for its inevitable loss. As Luke evolves toward his role as a Jedi Knight, he shows less and less reliance on his lightsaber, viewing it as the tool it was intended to be rather than the weapon he'd previously wielded it as. Star Wars #31 sees Luke underscore this idea that he "can be a Jedi without a lightsaber" and could easily replace his if necessary. Star Wars #29 sees Luke willingly give up the yellow lightsaber entirely for a period, resisting the temptation to use it as an easy - and loud - way out of a situation.

Will Solo's Qi'ra Cost Luke His Lightsaber?

Qi'ra in the Star Wars comics

Preview text for Star Wars #33 teases that Luke's lightsaber loss comes when his connection to the Force is disrupted, a result of Lady Qi'ra's efforts with Crimson Dawn. Qi'ra has recently made waves in the Force through the use of an ancient Sith artifact known as the Fermata Cage. The Fermata Cage has already been shown to have a profound effect on Force s, rippling out to Jedi and Sith alike whenever activated in the pages of Star Wars: Hidden Empire.

It seems that Qi'ra's efforts to take on Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader will hurt the Jedi as well, potentially changing Star Wars history by costing Luke Skywalker yet another lightsaber.
