Players can choose between a variety of lightsaber options in Respawn Entertainment's Star Wars: Jedi titles. While this customization is great - and Jedi: Survivor took it to another level with the number of parts that could be collected around its various planet hubs - this does raise the question of whether the game's protagonist Cal Kestis has a canon lightsaber color.

Initially, lightsabers started off as blue and red to signify who was good and evil, respectively, then Luke's new lightsaber in Return of the Jedi was green simply so it would show against the blue sky during the fight on Jabba's barge due to the technology of the time that movie was made. Since then, different colors such as white, yellow, orange, and purple - the latter simply because it was Samuel L. Jackson's favorite color - had been introduced, and Star Wars started incorporating these colors into lightsaber lore, with them each representing aspects of their lightsabers' owners. Jedi: Survivor introduced three new lightsaber colors to choose from, cyan, indigo, and magenta in addition to those seen in other Star Wars media.

Cal Kestis' Canon Lightsaber Color Is Probably Blue

Although Respawn Entertainment hasn't provided a definitive answer, Cal's canon lightsaber is most likely the traditional blue. The promotional art and trailers for both Jedi: Fallen Order and Jedi: Survivor shows Cal wielding a blue lightsaber, despite players being able to change the color very early on in each game.

This is backed up by the fact that in the scenes prior to being given the option to customize Cal's lightsaber - such as Jedi: Survivor's Coruscant intro in which he fights a team led by the Ninth Sister - Cal's lightsaber is blue. Cal's lightsaber also appeared blue in Jedi: Fallen Order's flashbacks to his training as a Padawan with Jedi Master Jaro Tapal, and again when he creates his second, dual-bladed lightsaber on Ilum before players get the option to change its color again, so with this latter cutscene in particular not opting to adapt to the color players have chosen, it seems highly likely that Respawn Entertainment considers blue to be the canon color for the young Jedi.

A blue lightsaber would make sense for Cal, as it's supposed to represent righteousness and bravery, which are traits Cal demonstrates consistently throughout his story. Blue was also used to indicate that the was a Jedi Guardian, someone who was highly skilled in lightsaber combat, which Cal clearly seems to be, having combined a variety of different lightsaber forms into his combat style, rather than merely mastering one like most Jedi.

Although the evidence does suggest that Cal's canonical lightsaber is blue, official statistics released from EA indicated that the majority of players actually changed it from this during their playthroughs of Jedi: Survivor. While it didn't say the percentage of who picked each color, EA's statistics showed that players' most popular lightsaber color for Cal was white, matching that of Ahsoka Tano. Ahsoka's white lightsabers proved her mastery of the Force as she purified the red Kyber crystals of the Sixth Brother's lightsaber after defeating him, and are rare within the Star Wars universe.

This could mirror where Cal's journey is going by the end of Jedi: Survivor. Although Cal is a Jedi, he does have to use the powers of the dark side of the Force on several occasions in Jedi: Survivor's final act, primarily to escape the Imperial Spy Bureau on Nova Garon, and then later when defeating his former ally Bode Akuna upon the revelation that he had betrayed Cal and the Stinger Mantis crew, and infiltrated them as an Imperial spy. Cal also states that "the [Jedi] Order is gone" and points out that it wasn't correct in all of its teachings, primarily those surrounding emotional attachments when addressing his feelings for Merrin.

Despite understanding both sides of the Force and using some abilities from either, Cal has not succumbed completely to the dark side, so it's unlikely his lightsaber will become red in a future Star Wars: Jedi title - although it likely wouldn't matter much if it did as players would likely have a choice of options to change it to anyway. He does, however, seem to be walking the path of a Grey Jedi, neither siding completely with the Jedi nor the Sith's teachings as he rebuilds a new home on Tanalorr for his allies and the Hidden Path.

Although Cal talks about building a new Jedi Order throughout both of the Star Wars: Jedi games, by the end of Jedi: Survivor, he has addressed the faults of his Jedi predecessors. Therefore, his teachings based on his prior experiences - and potentially combined with Merrin's use of Magick, which she may choose to teach as well - could bring about a more morally ambiguous group of Force-sensitive s. This would be rather than a traditional Jedi Order, which would explain why so many seem to believe the Jedi had been completely decimated by the events of A New Hope. If so, the player's choice of a white lightsaber could better represent Cal's journey than Respawn's default option of blue.

For now, players will have to wait and see where Cal's journey goes, and a different color may potentially suit him better at different points of his life, as was the case with Luke Skywalker, and the aforementioned Ahsoka Tano. A recent job listing indicated that the next Star Wars: Jedi game may be in development already, and with the story possibly building up to what could be a final part of a trilogy after Jedi: Survivor's ending, Cal's definitive canonical lightsaber color may become more apparent depending on what best suits his character by the end of his story.
