Cal Kestis is set to return in the Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, but the “survivor” in the title may not be referring to him. Although Cal, Cere, Merrin, and Greez would all fit the category of a survivor, the teaser trailer for the game shows off a few new characters who could potentially be the main survivor the title is hinting at. The sequel to Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is shrouded in mystery currently, with little to go off in of its story, apart from it taking place a number of years after the events of the first game.
[Warning: This article contains Jedi: Survivor takes place in 9 BBY, five years after the events of Fallen Order. The teaser trailer - which was shown off earlier in the summer - shows that things haven't gone well for Cal and the crew of the Stinger Mantis since the previous game. The main mode of transportation in Fallen Order appears to have suffered a crash landing in the trailer, while Cere, Merrin, and Greez are nowhere to be seen. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor's teaser also depicts Cal encountering a mysterious lightsaber-wielding character, and a figure in a seemingly neglected bacta tank.
On a surface-level reading, the game’s title could refer to Cal’s continued struggle to survive in a galaxy where Jedi are hunted. In a recent interview on the heroes of the Star Wars Jedi series into questionable situations. Asmussen also says that Jedi: Survivor will have a much darker tone than its predecessor, so Cal being the “survivor” may be too simple. There are a couple of other characters featured in the trailer that the game’s title could refer to instead.
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Title Meaning - Could It Be The Dark Side Character?
The trailer for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor features a mysterious dark side character facing off against Cal. The trailer implies that this character was sent by the Pau’an politician character speaking in the trailer. He is later shown opening a box with Cal’s lightsaber inside, presumably taken from him by the red lightsaber-wielding enemy. If this character could defeat Cal, they must be quite a formidable enemy and, by extension, may have survived some more harrowing situations than even he did in the first game - including the confrontation with Darth Vader in Jedi: Fallen Order's ending.
This character is likely not another Inquisitor, as they were heavily featured in the first game, so relying on them again wouldn’t make sense. The fact that this character and the Pau’an senator may be in business also points toward them not necessarily having strong ties to the Empire. They could be another Jedi who survived Order 66 but turned to the dark side afterward, like Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order's Taron Malicos.
Another character featured prominently in the trailer is the individual in the bacta tank. It could be that this character and the dark side character are the same, but it may be that they are different. Either way, to be placed in a bacta tank like they have shows they must have survived some kind of event. It's possible they too could be a Jedi survivor from the Clone Wars, given the room they're in looks abandoned. It's also possible that they could be a survivor of the Jedi's mortal enemies, the Sith, and that Cal has unleashed an evil unintentionally. While the identities of these characters are still unknown, expect to learn more when Star Wars Jedi: Survivor releases in 2023.
