The Star Wars Rebels. Years after their last encounter, Star Wars Rebels resurrected the rivalry with a brief but powerful interaction between the pair. In it, Maul met his end fairly quickly with Obi-Wan Kenobi using his improved fighting skills to get their one-on-one finished once and for all.

Obi-Wan and Maul have a long history that dates back to their first encounter in Star War: The Phantom Menace. At this time, both are still in vastly different points in their lives — Obi-Wan was Qui-Gon Jinn's young apprentice, while Maul was Darth Sidious'. At the end of the film, Maul was presumed to be dead after Obi-Wan successfully slicing him in half after the Sith killed his master. Years later they reunite during the events of Star Wars: The Clone Wars; Maul wanted to get his revenge by killing Duchess Satine Kryze, Obi-Wan's special friend while the Jedi Master helplessly watched. From there, it would take a long while again before their paths crossed with each other for the final time.

Unlike their previous interactions, Obi-Wan and Maul's last encounter was brief. Star Wars Rebels purposefully told the narrative from Maul's perspective as he was already incorporated into the story, trying to recruit Ezra Bridger to be his apprentice. After some a short discussion about how each had been since The Clone Wars, the pair quickly engaged in a battle, but instead of the elaborate duels that fans have seen from the pair in The Phantom Menace, the fight was quickly finished after Maul committed a fatal mistake, while Obi-Wan took advantage of it.

Maul and Obi-Wan prepare to have their final duel on Tatooine in Star Wars Rebels

Interestingly, there are so many cool elements in this battle despite being short and ittedly, not everyone was thrilled with how it panned out. So, in an effort to dissect it more to justify why it had to be brief, the Kenobi series should revisit it. Set eight years after the events of Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith, the Disney+ series will tackle the Jedi Master's time in Tatooine secretly looking after young Luke Skywalker. Depending on the time span covered by the project, it could get away with not directly adapting the fight, but it would be odd for it to fully skip it since it's a big moment in Obi-Wan's story, regardless of how brief it was.

The Kenobi prequel could better explain how he's able to defeat Maul quite easily, revealing how he continued to hone his connection with the Force, not to mention become wiser as he had to adapt in his new life hiding in the desert planet. While Star Wars Rebels revealed the encounter from Maul's perspective, the new Disney+ project could flip it and show it from Obi-Wan's point-of-view. Aside from the death of Maul, he also confirmed to his dying rival that he believes Luke is the Chosen One — an interesting detail considering that Anakin Skywalker was originally dubbed that before he turned to the Dark Side and became Darth Vader.

Unlike films which typically get adapted in novels and comic books, Star Wars animated narratives, ittedly, usually don't get revisited in other forms. That said, this could be changed through the Kenobi series.. If the show is the final time Lucasfilm will put a focus on the Jedi Master, they need to make sure that the series does a good job in addressing all the pivotal moments in his life for a satisfying send-off.
