This December, we’ll finally get to see how Disney is concluding its The Rise of Skywalker, which promises to round out the Skywalker saga for good. Little is known about the plot of the movie, only that it will involve a somehow-alive Emperor Palpatine and the Resistance will more than likely triumph against the First Order at the end. Fans are expecting Kylo Ren’s little-seen group, the Knights of Ren, to play a large part in the plot, since they’ve been teased from the beginning. So, here are 10 Questions About The Knights Of Ren, Answered.

Do the Knights of Ren have the Force?

The Knights of Ren do all have Force powers that they have mastered, and they all veer towards the Dark Side. Their intention is to be the next wave of villainous Force s, with no Jedi to fight them the way that they fought back against the Sith back in the day. Perhaps they will emerge as just this in The Rise of Skywalker, with Rey and Broom Boy and the ghost of Luke Skywalker creating the next wave of heroic Force s to fight back against them. As long as the Knights of Ren are on the rise, maybe the new form of the Jedi could be, too—especially since these sequels have focused so heavily on trying to end the Jedi without ending the Jedi.

Why do the other Knights of Ren not have lightsabers?

In Rey’s vision in The Force Awakenswhich is, so far, the only time we’ve seen all the Knights of Ren on-screen together—we see that Kylo Ren is the only one with a lightsaber. So, why do the other Knights of Ren not have lightsabers? Well, there’s every chance that they all do have lightsabers and just weren’t wielding them in Rey’s vision. Or, if they don’t have lightsabers, it might be because they’re from a part of the galaxy where the myths of the Jedi and the Sith have no meaning and they never discovered the kyber crystals that make lightsabers.

Do the Knights of Ren have masters?

Snoke and Kylo Ren in Force Awakens

What separates the Sith from the Knights of Ren is “the Rule of Two.” This is the law that decrees that Sith Lords have to be trained in the ways of the Sith by a master and then subsequently train their own apprentices when they become masters. The Jedi have a similar rule. However, the Knights of Ren don’t have this rule, which differentiates them from their fellow dark Force s. That’s not to say that the Knights of Ren are entirely without guidance; Snoke once referred to Kylo Ren as the “Master of the Knights of Ren,” so they do have a leader.

Were the Praetorian guards in The Last Jedi the Knights of Ren?

Snoke's Praetorian Guards in Star Wars The Last Jedi

One of the few scenes that diehard Star Wars fans actually enjoyed in The Last Jedi was the lightsaber battle in Snoke’s throne room in which Rey and Kylo Ren team up to take on Snoke and then his Praetorian guards. Some fans speculated that the Praetorian guards were actually the Knights of Ren.

However, writer-director Rian Johnson has explained that, while he considered filling that role with the Knights of Ren, the Praetorian guards aren’t them; “I guess I could’ve used [the Knights of Ren] in place of the Praetorian guards, but then it would feel like wasting them, because all those guards had to die.”

Are the Knights of Ren d with the Sith?

Star Wars the Last Jedi Kylo Ren in Snoke's Red Throneroom

The short answer is, no. Aside from Kylo Ren’s lightsaber being red, the Knights of Ren have nothing to do with the Sith. They are dark Force s, similar to the Sith (in other words, Force s who use their Force abilities for evil and not to bring peace), but they’re not Sith Lords themselves. In the time of Disney’s sequel trilogy, the Jedi and the Sith are depicted as being long-forgotten myths, whose existence is hotly debated across the galaxy. The Knights of Ren were actually intended to be a new generation of Force warriors; the next step in the Sith’s evolution.

Where have the Knights of Ren been this whole time?

Kylo Ren speaks with Han Solo before killing him on Starkiller Base in The Force Awakens

Where have the Knights of Ren been for the past two movies while their leader has been killing his way through his family and taking over the galaxy? The truth is, we don’t know the answer to this question. There might not be an answer at all, and it might just be a plot hole. But hopefully this isn’t the case. We can only hope that J.J. Abrams has a pretty good answer to this question and he’s going to reveal it in The Rise of Skywalker. Otherwise, we could have another Lost finale situation on our hands; a poignant ending ruined by too many mysteries being left unsolved.

What is Snoke’s role in the Knights of Ren?

Snoke Star Wars The Last Jedi

Supreme Leader Snoke was just a powerful outcast who sat out the previous Star Wars movies while he was waiting for the right moment to strike. That moment came as soon as Luke Skywalker began training Ben Solo, a descendant of the last Sith Lord, Darth Vader, to use the Force. Snoke saw the potential in Kylo Ren to dominate the galaxy, so he swayed him over to the Dark Side and led him away from his former life as he took on the name Kylo Ren. But Snoke himself wasn’t the founder of the Knights of Ren, he was only a mentor to Kylo, not all of them.

Do they all have masks like Kylo Ren?

Star Wars The Rise of Skywalker Trailer - Kylo Ren Mask

A photo of the Knights of Ren was published in Vanity Fair recently, showing them all wearing black masks and cloaks like Kylo Ren. However, none of them were wearing the exact same mask he wears. One of them has a helmet that looks like the ones worn by Jabba the Hutt’s skiff guards in the opening sequence of Return of the Jedi. Another one has a helmet that looks like a black version of the first version of Iron Man’s armor. So, the other Knights of Ren don’t have masks exactly like Kylo Ren’s, but they do all have masks that are a little like his.

Are the Knights of Ren dead?

Star Wars The Rise of Skywalker Trailer - Kylo Ren

It’s highly unlikely that the other Knights of Ren are dead. J.J. Abrams has said that he’d like to see Disney make a Knights of Ren movie one day, suggesting that they’re still out there or that we won’t get the full story of what happened to them in Episode IX. There’s every chance we’ll be surprised by a plot twist, like the revelation that Kylo Ren killed them all a long time ago, but it doesn’t seem likely. He’s already been responsible for one past massacre in this franchise, so it would be lazy writing to repeat that twist.

Will the Knights of Ren appear in Episode IX?

Kuruk, a member of the Knights of Ren in Star Wars, holding a blaster with hyperspace in the background.

A recent piece published in Vanity Fair featuring photos from the set of The Rise of Skywalker showed J.J. Abrams directing the other Knights of Ren on the set. Their appearance in the movie was almost a given anyway because Episode IX is the last chance to get the Knights of Ren in this trilogy. There’s a very basic rule in screenwriting called “plant and payoff.” You “plant” something early on, like the fact that there’s a whole gang of villain exactly like Kylo Ren out there that he’s been leading for years, and then, later on, this needs a “payoff,” like having them show up in Episode IX.
