Star Wars has retconned a detail that will likely have a major impact on James Mangold’s movie the Jedi Order. While the origins of the Jedi Order have been explored in Star Wars Legends, there’s no telling what Mangold will keep and retcon from those stories that are no longer considered canon.
With Star Wars: The Last Jedi hinting at the Jedi Order’s origin, it will be interesting to see how James Mangold’s movie does or does not fall in line with what audiences have already learned. After all, it’s entirely possible that in more than 25,000 years, information was lost or stories were changed to fit a particular mold, something Luke Skywalker wouldn’t have known by the time The Last Jedi takes place. This makes it possible for Mangold and his Dawn of the Jedi movie to take advantage of one subtle retcon Star Wars has already put into motion.
The Last Jedi's Ahch-To May Not Be The Birthplace Of The Jedi At All
The Star Wars book Star Wars Timelines, released in April 2023, makes one subtle change to the planet Luke Skywalker called home during the sequel trilogy, as Ahch-To may not be the actual birthplace of the Jedi. Star Wars Timelines reads, “Among the earliest locations, and likely the first, is a temple constructed on the planet of Ahch-To.” While the book confirms that Ahch-To may very well have been the planet where the Jedi Order was established, it also leaves the door open for that to not be the case. This retcon may change the future of Star Wars and could impact multiple titles.
Star Wars Has Given James Mangold Creative Freedom About The Jedi Origin
With Ahch-To possibly not being the birthplace of the Jedi, Mangold is now given more freedom in how his movie plays out. Additionally, this may be something explored in Rey Skywalker’s New Jedi Order movie. It’s unknown where Rey will house her new Order, and it could very well connect to the origins of the old Jedi Order. The retcon expands the different directions Star Wars could take in this next era of the franchise. With Dave Filoni, who's now Lucasfilm's Chief Creative Officer, already taking viewers to a brand-new galaxy in Ahsoka, the possibilities for never-before-seen worlds, galaxies, and realms are endless.
Daisy Ridley will be returning to Star Wars as Rey Skywalker for the New Jedi Order film, which will take place about 15 years after the events of the Star Wars sequel trilogy.
It’s entirely possible that Mangold will have Ahch-To heavily featured in Dawn of the Jedi, but Star Wars has given Mangold an out if that isn’t the way he’d like to take the story. This retcon makes things vague, which, in turn, blurs the line of what Mangold will have to accomplish in Dawn of the Jedi. Without all the details, it’s hard to know what audiences can expect, but it seems that Lucasfilm isn’t allowing themselves to be tied to one idea. This is likely the best for a movie detailing the origin of the Jedi as the story of Dawn of the Jedi develops.
