The first page of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, there were complaints that the movie felt too similar to what was shown before. Director Rian Johnson made sure to flip the galaxy upside down with The Last Jedi, and he wound up causing some backlash in the process. The dislike came from the way Johnson expanded the rules of Star Wars, while also doing surprising things with many of the characters.

How Luke (Mark Hamill) returned and how he was used in the film were among the many surprises, as he wanted to be left alone rather than help those in need. The movie also didn't necessarily address what Luke had been up to between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens., beyond the fact that he sought to create a new generation of Jedi. Thanks to Star Wars' canon, there's a good chance most of this info will be revealed in various other ways. However, the next piece of canon may actually raise more big questions instead of answering them.

Dork Side of the Force claims that someone with an early copy of the official The Last Jedi novelization provided them with the book's first sentence. According to the site, the very first sentence of the book reveals that Luke was married in the saga. Since the book isn't yet out, this information hasn't yet been confirmed, and it should certainly be taken with a grain of salt. But, if it is true, it adds more layers and questions to what happened to Luke after Return of the Jedi. Here is the reported line: "Luke Skywalker stood in the cooling sands of Tatooine, his wife by his side."

The novelization of The Last Jedi will officially be released on March 6, so there's going to be a bit of time before this information can be corroborated by another source. Hopefully, Johnson - who was heavily involved in the writing process on the book - or author Jason Fry can either confirm or deny the news entirely.

If this is, indeed, true, then it would further change the perception around what Luke was up to throughout all those years. In the now non-canon materials known as Legends, Luke married Mara Jade, a former assassin for the Emperor and eventual Jedi Knight. This potential line, alone, isn't enough to confirm Jade in official canon, but it does make it possibility. Then again, the creative team could've created a new wife for Luke instead.

This does, however, raise quite a few questions if true, regardless of her identity. First of all, what happened to his wife? That could be revealed in the book too (assuming this is true). She could've ed away naturally or died in the attack on Luke's Jedi Academy. It's also possible that Luke abandoned her. There's also no telling how public this marriage was. The Jedi Order doesn't allow for marriage, so Luke would've had to break that rule (just like his father) in order to make this be... if he was following the sacred Jedi texts, of course. If it was in secret, that could mean Leia, Han, and Kylo never knew about her. If she's alive, this revelation could set up a role for her in Star Wars: Episode IX, but we'll just have to wait and see.
