Warning: SPOILERS for Star Wars #29
Even after nine mainline films and multiple spin-off projects, the one of those is the Sacred Jedi Texts first glimpsed in Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi. The texts were notable for many reasons; they were the among the first paper books to be seen in the series, they were written long before the events of the films, and they still hold wisdom about concepts and planets long thought lost. But Star Wars #29 reveals the franchise has only scratched the surface of the books.
The Sacred Jedi Texts, introduced in The Last Jedi, ended up as a driving force behind the plot of The Rise of Skywalker. Rey learned about the Sith planet of Exegol through the books, and also learned that Luke searched for the world but never found it. Even before the movies, Luke kept them in a tree during his seclusion on his island home (although it is heavily hinted by Yoda that he either did not read every page or internalized every lesson). Luke sought to burn the tree and the texts within during Episode VIII, but Rey had fortunately stolen the books before Yoda summoned a lightning bolt that destroyed the tree entirely.
In Star Wars #29, written by Charles Soule with art by Ramon Rosanas, key of the Rebellion take a much-needed break on the planet of Spira, near the Galactic Core. Lando attempts to persuade Luke to him and Chewbacca in a game of Sabacc, but Luke is mesmerized in one of the books. "I don't get a lot of chances to study this stuff, and every page is showing me things about the Force and the Jedi I've never even thought of." Luke returns to his book, and even Chewbacca slipping into the water causing a splash doesn't distract him; he uses the Force to keep the water away from the Jedi texts.
The Jedi Texts Are Still A Mystery After All These Years
In the films, it once appeared that the Jedi texts were simply the doctrine of the Prequel Era; the books contained laws and practiced followed by Yoda, Mace Windu and the other Jedi Masters. But this comic is set between the events of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi - after Luke's training with Yoda. If Luke is surprised and intrigued by the content contained within the books, that means that Yoda kept significant Jedi techniques from Luke - or even Yoda himself was unfamiliar with the texts.
This is the grand mystery of the Sacred Jedi Texts: do they contain the same doctrine to which the old Jedi adhered, allowing them to become blinded by the actions of the Sith? Or do they have new information which was dismissed by the Jedi Council altogether? Star Wars has yet to answer this question, but perhaps Luke Skywalker will reveal the mysteries in the future; he is, after all, a Force Ghost and can still interact with Rey.
