The first three new Star Wars movies for December 2022, 2024, and 2026.
Since there were only three dates announced, it raised questions as to which movies would be coming out when. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said Johnson is working closely with Benioff & Weiss while plotting the next decade of Star Wars content, but never stated which series would come out of the gates first. Now, that mystery has been solved.
In a Twitter Q&A session with Attractions Magazine, Disney CEO Bob Iger revealed that the first post-Episode IX Star Wars movie will come from Benioff & Weiss. Check out their post in the space below:
Iger remained mum on the Star Wars movies planned for 2024 and 2026, so it's still anyone's best guess as to what those are. Theoretically, those slots could be set aside for two more films in the Benioff & Weiss series, or Lucasfilm is going to alternate between Benioff & Weiss and Johnson. They're obviously still in the earliest days of ironing things out, and more details will be shared when the studio is ready. Earlier this year, rumors suggested Star Wars Celebration 2020, which takes place in Anaheim. That seems like a good venue to build hype for the next era of Star Wars films.
Following drawing heavy criticism for certain character decisions and arguably rushed storytelling. In the wake of all that, some people are now skeptical Benioff & Weiss are the right fit for Star Wars, but it's worth keeping in mind they'll be collaborating with others on these movies. As of now, the two are producing and writing, leaving the directing for someone else to handle. Still, it'll be fascinating to see how this all comes together into the next decade.
