The future of Rey's New Jedi Order film lost its screenwriter, Steven Knight. There are rumors a new writer has indeed been appointed, but there's nothing concrete, and Lucasfilm recently pulled a previously-assigned Star Wars release date for 2026 - one generally believed to have been a fix for this film.
Ridley, for her part, still seems optimistic. Speaking to City AM, Ridley revealed she's party to conversations with Lucasfilm that may actually see her becoming a producer on the movie. "I’ve been over all of the developments," she confirmed, "so I feel more consciously involved [than before] but I various things either JJ [Abrams] or Ryan [Johnson] told me, so I was always really made to feel involved. But on this one I’m aware of the route development. It’s also really nice to know that we have the time to do it right, and of course I’m really excited to film and I’m really excited to share developments with the world. It’s all good, it really is!"
What Daisy Ridley's Comments Mean For Star Wars
There's no need to worry about this project
Steven Knight's departure left many viewers feeling uncertain about the New Jedi Order movie. It's easy to understand why that is the case; there have been far too many canceled Star Wars movies, and Lucasfilm has earned a reputation for behind-the-scenes drama that many fear could mean this film will never happen. The fandom feels particularly broken and divisive after the cancelation of The Acolyte. Recent reports of Lucasfilm's indecision over the future left things looking worse than before.
But those same reports stressed that Daisy Ridley is Star Wars' most valuable cinematic asset. Lucasfilm's uncertainty about the future lies in the studio's wish to make the most of Ridley's return and get things right; there are apparently multiple projects in the works that incorporate Ridley, and the future will be decided by which one gets through to filming first. This doesn't necessarily mean that Obaid-Chinoy's pitch will happen, but it does mean Rey's return is surely a certain thing.
Our Take On Daisy Ridley's Return As Rey
Lucasfilm need to get this right
Lucasfilm's assessment is right. The Star Wars sequel trilogy failed to develop its characters, and ended with only one in a strong place; Daisy Ridley's Rey. It's telling that this part of the Star Wars timeline has officially been dubbed "New Jedi Order," indicating Rey is central to everything going forward. The main hope, realistically, is that this movie will come out in 2027 - the 50th anniversary of A New Hope, the perfect time to relaunch Star Wars. So there is time to spare right now - but the clock is ticking if Lucasfilm is to hit that milestone.

The tenth mainline installment in the Star Wars franchise is the first movie to follow the sequel trilogy, where Mark Hamill's Luke, Carrie Fisher's Leia, and Harrison Ford's Han Solo gave their final farewell. After the release of The Rise of Skywalker, development on a direct sequel had become dormant as Disney shifted focus on other parts of the galaxy, namely, Disney+ shows such as The Mandalorian, Andor, and Ahsoka. However, a movie starring Daisy Ridley as Rey Skywalker was officially announced at Star Wars Celebration 2023.
