The Marvel Cinematic Universe may have helped to inspire Dave Filoni's the Star Wars canon was reset in the wake of Disney's decision to purchase Lucasfilm, the studio has been attempting to replicate those efforts.

ScreenRant's Ash Crossan spoke with Lucasfilm Chief Creative Officer Dave Filoni, who addressed his yet-unnamed Star Wars movie. While he discussed his excitement about Ahsoka season 2 and Andor season 2, he explained that his focus is on balancing his many other priorities. He explained that he has been inspired by Feige and the MCU, but he does see some key differences in how they operate, as opposed to how the Star Wars universe has been run. Check out his quote below:

Oh gosh. Well, I have to finish season two first and then also I'm helping out with all these other projects now.

So I'm trying to balance all those things and my priorities are really what's best for the franchise and where my energy is best spent and we'll see. But everybody, everything is working well right now, so I'm really excited about what I'm seeing excited about. Andor season two is coming out, the Beautiful Talent.

It's fantastic. So that's inspirational. I still take so much inspiration from all these things. Just because I work there doesn't mean I'm not like, wow, that's incredible. I'm marvel at what everybody else is accomplishing and I feed off of that and I use the challenge myself. So we'll see. Kathy [Kennedy] and I talk all the time and she and I are figuring out what should go and what goes next and what makes the most sense. And I love working with her. She's a great collaborator. And how spoiled am I to work with George Lucas and Kathleen Kennedy? That that's pretty great. And also I have Carrie Beck, she works in development. She produces on Ahsoka with me, but she's right there as well. And so we are figuring all these things out and looking at every project and yeah, it's like project development. They don't all develop at the same time. But in Star Wars it's tricky because you need certain things to go before one another if they're in the same space of the way the audience will perceive it, which is why, and I said this in an earlier interview, I really, I'm fascinated by what Kevin Feige was able to pull off. I think it's so special and so unique. The Marvel Cinematic Universe and what he was able to accomplish on a timeline and perfectly place all these elements. It's an incredible skill and a real...

It's really remarkable. We are not operating like they do. We're a bit different in Star Wars because our timeline moves a little bit differently. But I take a lot of inspiration even from that. And I've talked to Kevin and what a great guy. And so we're at a great moment.

What This Means For Filoni's Star Wars Movie

Filoni Is Being Cautious With The Franchise

The main difference between the MCU and the Star Wars movies is exactly what Filoni mentioned; the timelines are extremely different. While the MCU generally runs linearly, this universe regularly leaps between eras, focusing primarily on the prequels, originals, and the sequel era. Filoni's new movie will take place in the New Republic, after the fall of the Empire and the apparent death of Emperor Palpatine. While the MCU's linear progression makes for a consistent story, the CCO is developing this movie with the knowledge that audiences already know how the First Order falls.

Filoni was recruited by George Lucas to write, direct, supervise, and produce Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and he has since become the CCO of Lucasfilm.

There are some benefits to his style of operation, as he only needs to worry about one universe, while the MCU is currently exploring the multiverse. Filoni has been able to benefit from viewing the production style of the MCU, while also simplifying his own story by featuring just one universe, as opposed to the MCU's vast collection of realities. He has also been able to take advantage of seeing the MCU's pitfalls, especially regarding the struggle of mixing semi-popular TV shows with movie characters, as Marvel Studios attempted with The Marvels (2023).

Our Take On Filoni's Timeline Lesson

The Star Wars Universe Has Already Been Reset

General iral Thrawn is displeased as he speaks with someone in Ahsoka

Filoni is taking all the right steps by working with Feige, while also acknowledging that he cannot utilize the same model of storytelling. The MCU succeeded because of its consistent story, while Star Wars has gradually introduced elements of its universe in slow, methodical, and winding ways. Even entire swathes of the canon have been entirely reset, as many books, games, and comics were relegated to Legends, which can confuse audiences. By acknowledging those differences, Feige is ensuring that he can learn from the MCU's successes, while also adapting them to better suit the Star Wars model.
