Marvel Comics has just dropped some massive Star Wars news, revealing that its relaunch of its flagship Star Wars ongoing series will take readers into the wide-open territory of the post-Return of the Jedi era, filling in the gaps in the franchise's timeline between the Original Trilogy and the Disney+ series The Mandalorian.

As officially announced by StarWars.com, the volume of Star Wars will pick up where Marvel's Battle of Jakku series leaves off, with author Alex Segura promising "new galactic threats, foes, and mysteries for our beloved heroes to grapple with" as the epoch of the New Republic becomes the centerpiece of the franchise moving forward.

When Marvel's previous Star Wars series debuted in 2015, it was ittedly met with mixed reactions from hardcore fans of the franchise; while the ongoing flagship title quickly, initially written by Jason Aaron, quickly proved to be a high-caliber Star Wars story, many readers were still reeling from best Star Wars tales ever.

The series quickly, and repeatedly, validated Marvel and Disney's decision to return to the timeframe between A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back, yet few readers could have predicted it would take a full decade before the comics reached the post-Return of the Jedi era. Now, that much-anticipated moment has finally arrived. As the author of the relaunched Star Wars book, Alex Segura, stated:

Now that we've put the period at the end of the Galactic Civil War with the Battle of Jakku, we can speed ahead into a new, uncharted era, with some new galactic threats, foes, and mysteries for our beloved heroes to grapple with, blending the familiar with the new and shocking. These stories will be packed with action and the character moments Star Wars fans have come to expect, featuring twists on the galaxy and landscape we know, with an eye toward making sure people can jump in easily and with any issue. We can't wait.

It cannot be overstated what a huge step this is for the franchise – and Marvel seems prepared to make it well worth the wait.

Marvel's "Battle Of Jakku" Series Opened The Door To An Ambitious New Era For Star Wars Comics

Over the past several months, Marvel's Star Wars comics have bridged the gap between its final stretch of stories leading into Return of the Jedi, and the immediate aftermath of the Battle of Endor, including the ultimate battle in the Galactic Civil War over the desert planet of Jakku. These comics have set the stage for ambitious stories unimpeded in the short-term by tentpole film moments to work around, meaning Marvel has a nearly-blank slate of thirty years in-continuity to tell many wild, thrilling stories in.

The ongoing series will continue to carefully lay the foundation for the events of the Sequel Trilogy, making this the most creatively pivotal point in Star Wars comics history yet.

What fans are most excited for, of course, is for Marvel's Star Wars comics to crossover, or at least acknowledge, the events of the Disney+ Mandalorian series, which is currently one of the few pieces of the franchise's vast multimedia puzzle in place in the post-ROTJ era. It is certain that characters like Din Djarin, and more from the TV show will make their way into Marvel Comics, while the ongoing series will continue to carefully lay the foundation for the events of the Sequel Trilogy, making this the most creatively pivotal point in Star Wars comics history yet.
