Star Wars Outlaws’ adorable new companion Nix has officially beaten out BD-1 from Jedi: Fallen Order and Jedi: Survivor as the cutest sidekick in the galaxy. Nix, the lovable axolotl-like merqaal, brings a lot of personality and energy to Star Wars Outlaws while simultaneously contributing massively to gameplay. The smooth integration of Nix into every task in Star Wars Outlaws alongside his cheeky personality puts him a cut above any other Star Wars companion.
Star Wars Outlaws’ Nix is one of the best parts of the entire game; he is central to most of the gameplay as he helps Kay Vess with all of her adventures. Nix is not just part of Star Wars Outlaws in the sense that he is present alongside Kay Vess as they travel throughout the galaxy, but he actively participates alongside her and independently of her. While BD-1 is one of the cutest droid companions in all of Star Wars, he doesn't have a personality fleshed out to the same degree as Nix.
Nix's Superior Gameplay Integration
More Than Just A Sidekick
BD-1 is certainly a useful companion in Jedi: Fallen Order and Jedi: Survivor, as he rides alongside Cal Kestis occasionally scanning environments, slicing computers, and tossing Cal stim packs to heal with mid-battle. Beyond that, BD-1 mostly silently accompanies Cal while the events of the game, especially Jedi: Survivor, play out around them. Unfortunately, BD-1 doesn’t add much to the gameplay in the same way that Nix does. BD-1 becomes useful in certain puzzle situations, but not in any way that a toolkit on Cal’s belt couldn’t also accomplish.
In of gameplay, Nix is a superior companion to BD-1 simply because Nix is much more useful in every situation Kay Vess encounters and commanding him is extremely easy. Nix aids Vess in almost everything she needs to do in Star Wars Outlaws, from navigating maps with puzzles that require Nix to access hard-to-reach places to distracting enemies when Kay needs to sneak past them. Nix is useful in such a large range of ways that BD-1 simply can’t compete.

Star Wars Outlaws Review: Dazzling Hives Of Scum & Villainy
Star Wars Outlaws focuses on a grimier, seedier side of the universe with a rich, detailed open world that features both new and legacy characters.
While using BD-1 to scan interesting places around the map can lead to unlocking information about environments or past civilizations, the droid doesn’t have the same satisfying impact on gameplay. Nix is smoothly integrated into the gameplay of Star Wars Outlaws in every situation, while BD-1 tends to interrupt Cal’s exploration by scampering off of his shoulder to scan a wall or object throughout Jedi: Fallen Order and Jedi: Survivor.
Nix's Personality Shines In Star Wars Outlaws
More Interactions & Mini Games For Nix
Star Wars Outlaws takes the time to show off Nix's personality in even the smallest of interactions. Buying food with Nix will trigger a short minigame where Kay and Nix enjoy their meal together, while aiming your blaster at Nix will prompt him to dramatically play dead. In fact, players are able to pet Nix whenever they want (and should take full advantage of this option).

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Review - Cal Kestis Becomes One of Star Wars' Best Heroes
Jedi: Survivor not only cements itself as a premier Star Wars game, but also establishes Cal as one of the franchise’s most compelling characters.
This merqaal is cute, yet devious, as he distracts enemies with adorable performances and trots back to Kay Vess with stolen goods after pickpocketing unsuspecting customers of the galaxy’s cantinas and markets. Nix doesn’t just steal for Kay’s sake, but because he enjoys doing it! His particular dedication to Kay adds to his character, since the pair grew up together with meager means and are completely bonded.
When compared to BD-1’s companion status, which is as a random droid picked up after another Jedi ed away, Nix has a much more compelling backstory. Simply put, Star Wars Outlaws gives Nix more to do and gives the player more opportunities to bond with him than Jedi: Fallen Order and Jedi: Survivor. BD-1 is a cute companion, but he lacks the flair and detail that makes Nix a much more memorable sidekick.
