some decent reviews from players, especially those who have been itching for more details about the world outside of the Jedi. Though many other games set in this universe aim to place a lightsaber in the hand of players, this is the first to center on an average person, namely Kay Vess, showing an entirely new perspective.

While the game may bring a new narrative to the larger canon set between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, players are obsessed with Nix, the furry pet companion of the main protagonist. Not only is the axolotl-looking creature an adorable addition to the narrative, but he's also useful in many ways. Of course, the first thing most players will want to do is pet him — but he's not the only creature ready to capture Kay's attention.

The creative director behind Star Wars Outlaws spoke with Screen Rant at Summer Game Fest about what it's like to step into protagonist Kay's shoes.

Can You Pet Nix In Star Wars Outlaws?

Give The Sweet Boy Some Attention At Any Time

As Kay's best friend and only trusted companion, not only is Nix a key player in the Outlaws adventure unfolding throughout the game, but he's also an adorable addition to the Star Wars canon. And yes, players can pet Nix in the game — there's no limit on when or how often a player decides to show love to their cute sidekick. Just like most companions in real life, he's always ready to take a head scratch or two.

Petting Nix is actually incredibly simple. On console, players only need to hold down L1 when they approach him and click the right thumbstick to pet. It's similarly simple on PC; hold Q to trigger his controls, and press E. This will prompt the cute animation that happens every time he's pet, and also make Nix happy (helping with a quest or two).

Nix Isn't The Only Creature Players Can Pet In Star Wars Outlaws

There Are Plenty Of Other Creatures Ready To Be Pet Across The Planets

Star Wars Outlaws - Kay petting Nix

Though Nix may be the most loyal creature players will encounter in their journey throughout the planets that make up the corner Star Wars Outlaws covers, he's not the only one willing to accept Kay's affections. Giving a gushiro some food on Toshara will prompt a whole colony of them to gather around Kay, each of them looking for another scrap of food or some head pats. Robumas, another new creature added to the Star Wars canon as a native of Toshara, will also happily allow Kay to approach and pet them.

But it's not just the creatures created by the minds at Massive Entertainment that players can pet. On Tatooine, Kay can pet the Banthas, the Dewbacks, and the Scurriers, each of which have made appearances in various pieces of Star Wars lore. On Kijimi, the Henku will also happily bow their heads long enough for Kay to pet them. These cold-loving highland cow lookalikes are one of the only creatures on this planet that are kind enough to pet but are still worth a couple of minutes of playtime.

Star Wars Outlaws’ Syndicates give the player unique rewards when they reach each reputation level, but some have better rewards than others.

That said, petting another animal will draw Nix's jealousy, and in some situations, he'll show his displeasure by flashing his but at Kay as her attention is diverted from him, similar to a house cat, per the Can You Pet the Dog? X . It's an additional level of attention to the cute companion that makes him feel more realistic (and gives players something to chuckle at).

Star Wars Outlaws not only tells the story of a regular scoundrel in the greater universe, pivoting the story away from the trials of the Jedi, but it also has introduced plenty of adorable creatures into the world's canon. Massive Entertainment clearly knows that players will want to pet every new creature they come across -- and Nix and the other fauna are happy to pause for some pets in between quests.
