Marvel’s events of the cinematic Sequel Trilogy.
Star Wars #1, written by Alex Segura, with art by Phil Noto, inaugurates an entirely new epoch for the franchise’s Disney canon; for over a decade, Marvel Comics has meticulously filled in the space on the timeline between the Original Trilogy films, but now they face a decades-long swath of unknown, open narrative space.
Star Wars fans have waited, not always patiently, for over a decade for the franchise to return to this point on its timeline, the years following the Battle of Endor, and now it presents thrilling new challenges for the series’ creative team.
The Star Wars Expanded Universe Is A Wide Open Frontier Once More As It Enters The Sequel Era
Star Wars #1; Written By Alex Segura; Art By Phil Noto; Main Cover By Phil Noto; Available May 7, 2025 From Marvel Comics
While Marvel's Star Wars comics from the past decade have explored other eras of the franchise's vast timeline, from the deep past of the Old Republic Era, to the Prequel Trilogy era, to the period of Episodes VII through IX, the post-Return of the Jedi era has been largely off-limits. Marvel has been methodically building there, savoring the opportunity to focus on fleshing out the Original Trilogy arcs of the franchise's greatest characters, most notably Luke Skywalker. Now, though, the publisher has run out of road, suring the events of ROTJ; now the road to The Force Awakens truly begins.
Marvel's main Star Wars comic series just spent ten years covering approximately four years of in-universe continuity; now, they have 30 years of ground to cover.
That road will be long and winding, and full of action and drama, and hopefully, many surprises along the way. Marvel's main Star Wars comic series just spent ten years covering approximately four years of in-universe continuity; now, they have 30 years of ground to cover. In other words, this is a narrative that can, and likely will, stretch on indefinitely, as long as Marvel Comics continues to hold the rights to publish Star Wars comics. In other words, Alex Segura and Phil Noto's Star Wars #1 truly is the start of a massive new paradigm for the Expanded Universe.
Marvel's Post-ROTJ "Star Wars" Series Has The Intimidating Task Of Living Up To "Legends"
The Franchise's Legacy Hangs In The Balance
Of course, the greatest challenge Marvel's post-Return of the Jedi Star Wars comics face is the legacy of the franchise's previous "Legends" continuity, which Disney opted to retire in 2014, in favor of rebooting Star Wars canon. For many years, the post-ROTJ ongoing storyline was the backbone of the Expanded Universe; in fact, for a long time, it seemed unlikely that the long-rumored Sequel Trilogy would ever be produced, and so the novels, comics, and other EU media that continued the story of Star Wars in the aftermath of the Battle of Endor were sacred texts to hardcore fans.

Star Wars Is Finally Making a Return of the Jedi Sequel, And It's Everything OG Fans Wanted In the '80s
Marvel's Star Wars comics have finally reached post-Return of the Jedi, and the series' artist promises an '80s inspired aesthetic.
All these years later, Disney's decision to overwrite the original Expanded Universe still stings for many fans, even if it does make sense, especially in the light of how strong Marvel's Star Wars comics have been; nevertheless, every detail of this new Star Wars book will be under a microscope, scrutinized in relation to the "Legends" version of Star Wars history. Delivering a story that satisfies nostalgic fans and new readers alike will be a vital task for the book's creative team, and their success or failure will help define the next generation of Star Wars stories.
Star Wars #1 will be available May 7, 2025 from Marvel Comics.
